I am kind of a forum junky.

I absolutely love love the community here. Everyone is so friendly and this place has such a positive vibe.

I just purchased my first house and there is a lot of renovating that needs to be done. I was curious if anyone could suggest a place similar to GJ for homes.

Thanks

Xander

I'm a member over at Wavy Glass and a former member of Old House Web.

The main issue: The administrators over at OHW can't control the spammers and the message boards are trashed because of it. So, most members have transistioned over to Wavy Glass.

BTW, both of the above mentioned websites are specifically geared towards OLD house renovation as in REALLY OLD! Oh yeah, don't post anything about new replacement windows.......

LOL Thanks for the heads up. I will check both out.

This place is by no means old, '77.

I am sure my buddy has checked it out, he restored a 1906 home a few years ago. Amazing job.

I gave up on the web for DIY home project info. I like just getting a good book by a pro in the given subject and follow the instruction. I tried the forums for home improvement stuff and found so many conflicting answers on any question I had that I could not even process it all and gave up.

I've found the same. "Best Practice" seems to vary a lot from place to place and everyone has their own ideas about the right way to do things.

Honestly the best information resource for most any home project the last few years has been youtube. I can read an article about a certain procedure a hundred times and still not have the understanding I get from watching someone do it once. There are how-to videos for literally everything on youtube.

Or read the archives of the Old House Journal. Fine Homebuilding is another. Then there are 2-3 mags about Craftsman style houses. All have great articles and you don't have to listen to opinionated forum members.

dont go to diychatroom waste of time

I agree for the most part. Lots of bad info and threads without follow-up. But there is some decent info if you are willing to sift for it.

Agree!

Also, for good information, you can try these (mostly) professional forums. I would recommend just reading, since they generally aren't too friendly to DIYers:
Plumbing: Terry Love or Plumbing Zone
Tile: John Bridge
Drywall: Drywall Talk
Electrical: Mike Holt
Contractor Talk also has a series of forums. I like the Finish Carpentry forum.
Insulation/Efficient building: Green Building Talk

You might also check the Journal of Light Construction forum

Thanks for the tip Hoosier. Moving into our new to us 1890 victorian tomorrow. :D a lot of work has been done, but would be good to go there for projects and ideas.

seems we have a few things in common too.. old german air cooled cars and old houses.

side note.. i am like a kid at christmas and cant sleep. really psyched about finally having a garage to work in. the 2 car garage in the new house is a major step up from the true 1 car garage in the old house that was barely big enough to park a car in :D

^This. John Bridge Tile forum helped me remodel my whole bathroom and it looks like a pro did it. Tons of useful info on that site... Terry Love is a good all around site as well, tons of plumbing info put into easy to understand form...
