DIY magnetic fluid filter for floor jack?

I have noticed that some of the new higher end jacks include a magnet to catch particles inside the jack and it is supposed to prolong the jack life. Would a rare earth magnet stuck to the bottom of the power unit on a regular floor jack do the same thing?

Think it would work, or could it cause potential problems? Anyone?
