So I’ve put my first coat of primer on my walls to cover over the previous home owners paint job..I’m using Sherwin Williams latex primer. The stuff went on fantastic except for one area that I had forgotten that I previously covered with Zinser oil based primer. The SW primer just sat on top of the Zinser for several hours before finally starting to dry. Now I know you’re not supposed to put latex over oil but it seems to be drying.
My concern is what will happen when I put my actual color coat on am I going to have problems? So how do I fix this so this one area of my wall isn’t going to ruin my final outcome?
So when I check it in the morning and see that the SW primer has cured hard do I just put a second coat of SW over it and see if it will cure hard?
And if the initial SW coat is still soft in the morning then what?
Hmmm so much work over one little screw up hopefully someone can help

Yeah, latex over oil primer has been done forever so what probably happened was the primer absorbed into the raw drywall so it dried faster but it took longer sitting on the previously primed area. Hit that area with sandpaper and as long as the adherence is good, move along with sanding the rest.

Yep. I usually use kilz oil based when there are bad stains followed by latex paint.
Shellac based BIN is another good option. I always prime over a different based primer with Latex before painting with Latex never had any issues.

older latex paint formulations over oil paint could be very troublseome. A good latex primer should adhere just fine. I think zak77 explains why it took longer to dry. Some of today's 100% acrylic latex paints claim coverage over oil paint, but I still primer (just finishing up covering the last exposed oil based paint in my old house. man that stuff laid smooth!).
