DIY rhino liner work surface?

I recently picked up a black with blue trim krl722 and was initially considering getting a stainless steel top for it but after looking at that combo on the Snap-on configuration tool, I don't think it would look very good with the blue trim.

The only one that looks good is the truck bed liner top but the price is crazy considering what I have in the box. I know a few have went the ikea butcher block counter for a top route but has anyone tried to spray on bed liner to them to get something similar to the Snap-on offering.

From photos of the Snap-on top, it looks as if there is a small gap between the box and top. If that is the case, how have others mounted the ikea top?

Thanks,

hi,

i made my own top out of 3/4" mdf. 1.5" total thickness with a front edge profile.

anyways i plan on coating mine with truck bed lining..the snap on top of course inspired me also. i used a product called UPOL Raptor on my f150 and loved it. will be using it for the toolbox top also, the stuff gets killer review i suggest you check it out!

as for mounting, i'd just get like 5/16 18 threaded inserts and drive them into the underside of the butcher block top. may have to drill a couple clearance holes in the top of your toolbox for the hardware.

as far as the gap you mentioned, i'm not sure? do you mean the top doesnt sit flat on the box? i have about a .250" gap between the top of my box snd the work surface...the work surface is actually sitting along the front corner posts and outer edges of the box. may just cut a sheet of .250" wood to give the top a solid backing and make the top of the box flat the entire way across

If you go with the Ikea butcher block top, be sure to find one that is not warped. I had some of them previously and one was pretty twisted. They also smelled funny. But they are cheap and from China, so what do expect.

The DIY spray can bed liner is suprisingly durable, I did the floor of my 1 ton farm truck & that held up great.

That does not hold up well to brake cleaner and other solvents. I did the top of my HF cart in it and it dissolves. Anything you sit on it you'll get specks of the Bedliner on it like it's not really "dry". I've had it on for 2 years or so

After finding a few more photos online of the tops mounted, I can see where the small gap comes from on the krl in that the top is flush with the outside edges and overhangs the front some. Since the krl has the raised edges, the top has to come above before coming out to get to flush.

As ryanm mentioned, if a thin board is mounted to the bottom before the butcher block is, that will mimic the snap-on look.
