Anyone made a slide hammer?

Isn't it just 5/8 rod (with threads), a stop, and a weight?

Do the factory versions have any sort of heat treat?

You are right, they are simple to make. I was rebuilding my Snap-On YA-700 jack and had to remove a spacer. I used a carriage bolt to hook the spacer but the carriage bolt would not hook to my slide hammer with the adaptors I had on hand, so I used a piece of all thread I had. I used my Snap-On slide hammer weight, some nuts and washers and it worked fine.

Have made a couple. If you don't use it everyday, keep it simple, don't over think. Use what you have on hand.

Made several of different sizes including one attached to a vise grip.

Some ideas. Tap the end of the rod for a (?) but weld a hex head bolt of that diameter/pitch to many other types of hex head bolts, head-to-head sort of like a stud. Keep them all with your slide hammer for pulling "pull-dowels". Much faster than single-pointing two ends of a custom stud.

Standard tooling is 5/8-18 fine thread. Its useful to have that tap if you want to make special attachments for the standard slide hammer.

Above all else, make sure there's a comfortable ring or T-handle on the **** end to apply the alignment-pull. Resist the temptation to grip the **** end at any time of actual use...immediate pain and blood blisters result...don't ask how i know...

Drill the slideweight approx 1/64 (.010 to .020" will work if boring) larger than the shaft.

No heat treatment or exotic alloy needed unless you use it every day.

Pics...or it didn’t happen! (Read: I need ideas)

Here is one I made. Some 3/4 in pipe. a coupling on one end and a metal slug welded to the other, but I could have used couplings on each end. The slide part is a piece of cold rolled that already had a bore through it. It took minutes to make. I honestly can't remember why I made it, but it was probably to pull something that had a pipe thread. The other slide hammer I made was at work. Same idea, the pulling end was very specific for end caps that had to be removed from a piece of equipment.

I’ve made many slide hammers fir special jobs. My Dad made one with 1 inch steel rod about four feet long and took the center section from a semi truck rear end. Seems like that pinion gear on that HD14 Allis dozer was really stuck! But it was no match for my Dads slide hammer!
