Have you built a DIY steel staircase, and do you mind sharing a picture??

I have a 2 story block shop, and this winter I want to tear out the oak "temporary" stairs from 1972 and replace with steel. I have the skills, tools, can design it in CAD and the steel is already in the concrete to weld to.

I'm just look for visual ideas.

Right now 2 lengths of .188 channel and some railing material from Alro, and pre made non slip galvanized treads from Zoro are looking the most economical at about $750-850. That seems reasonable to me.

I've built a few steel staircases in industrial settings. It's not a particularly difficult endeavor, but it can be a bit of a head scratcher at times.

I'll see if I can get some photos.

I slipped once but it wasn’t because it was wet or slippery I just caught the edge of a step going down the stairs and slid down a few treads. We have the bar grating at work. I hate those things but that’s because they need to be painted yearly and they weigh a ton.

Not much I would change. I still need to build a handrail on the outboard side of the stairs if I ever get that far down the list.

I can't comment on the construction aspect, but years ago I added some 3M anti-slip tape stuff to the leading edge of some galvanized steps and it made a big improvement. I highly recommend it.

Yeah I am not doing the bar grates, on account of the unnecessary weight like you mentioned.

I am leaning toward this "truck step" style. With the tread plate like yours coming in a close second choice.
