I am in need of a winter project :O)
I need a trailer to carry my atv and carry some gravel.
Any of you built a dump trailer that can carry a cubic yard or so of gravel?
With an hydraulic system or similar ? Are those plans sold on the internet are any good ?
Cheers,
Ben

A yard of gravel, it is even worth building a trailer for that?

I fit around 2 yards in my pickup and that doesn't do too much. It's heavy stuff though, I was sitting right around 4000lbs on the 3 loads I did yesterday and today.

I gave up and having 20 yards brought in by truck. I'd be shoveling gravel in January otherwise.

i dont know if its really worth it to build a trailer that size. i bought a 4'6''x8' trailer last year for 350 used. it was exactly what i would build, even had the 3500lbs axle i wanted. i just didnt want a huge trailer with it. i've also noticed that it is really the perfect size for a yard of mulch. i am however looking to build a large dump trailer, 6x10, with two 7k axles.

you can find the hydro parts online, and there are plans all over the net, and at northern tool

You should be able to buy a 6x10 for around $1000 new, that will litterly be your best friend. I have a suv and this thing gets used alot anything from 4 yards of mulch to full sheets of drywall. Mine has a heavy duty axle with big tires for the price. Used ones are alot cheaper But mine has some nice features like drop down gate. I think I would have realistally about $750 to build it. Dj

A friend of mine built one with a jackall to dump. Worked real well carried about two yards heaped up. Hinge point closer to rear axle so it would only go up about 30' . "PLANS WE DON'T NEED NO STINKN PLANS"

folks, a yard of gravel weights 3,000 lbs, so two yards is 6,000 lbs. My 1/2 ton pickup is rated at 1,400lbs payload or 1/2 yard of gravel. Two yards of gravel on a single axle unbraked trailer behind a SUV is asking for trouble.

Around here, I get my gravel at $20/ton DELIVERED, $15/ton IF I pick it up, my gravel guy normally brings me 5 yard loads since I am at the top of steep and winding road...

However, I do own a real nice Big Tex lowboy, flatbed motorcycle trailer. A fine piece of engineering, but way to nice to haul gravel with:)

If you want a cheap utility trailer, try Northern Tool.

Here it's $10 a ton you haul. $110/hr for a dumptruck, 1 hr min.

Payload ratings... eh... sure... I guess.

MY truck is good for 8800lbs per the book. The truck weighs 7600lb full of fuel. Add me and I should only haul 1000lbs. HA! 1000lbs barely would squat the springs!

I hauled 4000lbs of gravel with it a couple days ago and it handled it just fine... could have put 5-6k, just not that much room in the bed

Here's me and my buddies dump trailer that we have around $100 in. All the parts are recycled. We got most parts free or for favors that people owed us. It has ag tires on it, so no big highway speeds, but works great for local runs.

I use my 25 hp kubota tractor to dump it. It can dump off around 3 ton. The trailer will handle around 5 ton if you have a bigger tractor to dump it with.

Does your trailer have its own pump that runs off of the tractor pto or do you use the hydraulic remotes on the tractor? Thanks , Mike

Use the remotes on the tractor. I have a loader on mine, so I have remotes. I did have to make a adapter hose because my quick connects were a size smaller than normal. We've been looking around to find a pump for it, but we're not gonna spend much money. So most likely it will stay the way it is. Usually gonna have the tractor around to move whatever we haul so not a big deal for us.

We built this about a year ago, Yes we know it needs a major paint job!
