It's OK if you have knowledge of electrical wiring but a bad idea if you don't. In Nebraska the State Electrical Division allows permits for homeowners if they currently live in the house where the wiring is to be done. Keep in mind you must fill out a state permit which subjects you to the same inspection by the State Inspector and they are quite serious about having everything followed to the letter of the National Electric Code.

Sounds tough but considering what's at stake (you and your family's life) you really wouldn't want any less. For the most part if you treat them right the inspectors will usually help you out to get things right.

People think electricity is a joke.. It should be treated with respect. I find it amusing how home owners will hire a plumber bc their scared to get a little Sh*t on their hands but when it comes to power its all fun and games ...

Total fail - bundle is missing the tie wraps and some of the nuts are missing the tape. And that hole in the stud probably needs to be pumped full of RTV to reduce tension on the wire bundle when you tie in more circuits to the junction. Petticoat Junction - chugga-chugga-chugga-toot

It's really interesting that sometimes the inspectors are just as much a problem as the homeowners, maybe not to the extent of the rats nest posted by the OP but they still give out wrong information at times. I am hearing this more and more.

I've actually seen worse!! This looks like temporary wiring for a remodel...yeah, yeah that's it!
Stud is drilled too close to the face, box for switches not nailed, splices should be in a box and accessible. Staples are good enough for MOST inspectors.

I've seen similar electrical work from so-called professionals and superior work from DIY guys. I myself won't mess with AC work because I don't know enough to even try it but I certainly can handle simple household wiring, I think it all has to do with what people are comfortable with trying.

Looks temporary during a remodel. The box on the left still has the sheetrock on it from the wall it was demo'd out of. Given the limited information we can assume the worst or we can assume the best.

At first look I would think it was like that in the wall, looks like it was moved to the left at some point. But the wires seem way to clean to be there for a long period of time.
