Those contractors that try to explain what the customer is getting are often met with glazed over eyes and then asked why are you $1000.00 more (or even $50 more) than Joe Hack.
Would be nice if that close. I have a spread of $9200-$44,000. Granted one included propane dual fuel but seen figures for 3 to 6 tons of A/C.

I have NEVER been given a copy of the other proposal after asking for it nicely.

Same here, when asking contractors for a detailed estimate.
They throw out some verbal figures but when asked for it in writing I've been given the "I've decided not to bid on your project" more than once.

Start asking detail oriented questions gets the same result too.

Out of 6 spray foam contractors I took the low bid, also the ONLY in writing, detailed bid.

Ask about a manual J and they just go with sq/ft per ton....:(

danski0224, thanks again for the detailed questions.

Some companies may choose not to answer them, oh well. I don't blame sales for not answering technical questions but they should at least be smart enough to ask an installer when they don't know. Anything else is bad service which negates that company.

I'm wondering, though, if the path of least resistance is to supply a set of requirements to the company and let them bid off that, and then attach it to the bid. If they don't want to do a written bid on a job that includes multiple heat pumps, ERV's, exhaust fans, and hoods (oh, Dryer Vents too!) oh well. It's easy to do an online Manual J and there is also duct sizing software. I think I'm capable of filling in the blanks there. At least that would give me an idea of how the system should be built. If they ask why or point out errors so much the better.

So should I go online and register it now? The tech that actually fixed it last week said the York site was showing the warranty expiring this year. I assume they are going by a mfg date for the default 5 years.

Good news, my builder is taking care of straightening out the warranty.

I have this situation myself...

My house is just over 2 years old and the builder has/had a plumbing & HVAC company. This week, while I was away on business, the wife found the ac line encased in ice and water all over the basement floor.
It needed 10 lbs of freon.

Hoping the builder can persuade York into reinstating the warranty at a start date of 2 years ago.....if he even responds. This is the only issue I have had with this builder & will be troubled if I don't get any response.

Good news, my builder is taking care of straightening out the warranty.

I hope they actually fixed the leak and didn't just charge the system...

If they did, where was the leak?

They put in a dye pack, so we don't know yet if there is a leak.

I wasn't home, but was told he needed to tighten a bunch of things......stuff aways happens when I'm on travel...

If it's not a mini split, there shouldn't be much of anything to "tighten" on the refigerant circuit except maybe a filter/drier or metering device...

Just like the other guy said Heat Pumps can Last a long time ware and tear is increased on them since your compressor in is working in summer and winter.
Reversing valves do go out just like anything else.
INSTALLATION IS THE KEY.
ONLY CONTRACTORS SKILLED IN THIS AREA SHOULD DO THE INSTALLATION.
Don't let them cut corners you.
You do the research on your contractors and you do fine.
Good Luck
