Would it be possible to get one of the big 36'' throat do-all bandsaws like the V-36 and put in a 2hp single phase motor to run it off of? I would like the ability to use one of these saws without buying a converter.

Re-powering a V-36 with a single-phase motor would be very easy. About any 56-frame motor will fit the motor swing plate. Although some drilling may be required as the motor foot will likely have a different bolting pattern. Standards have changed since the V-36 was built.
Make sure to up-size the magnetic starter (if equipped) and install the correct heaters to handle the new motor. Single-phase motors draw more current per leg than three-phase motors and thus need switches and starters rated to handle the higher current.
