Yes, very handy. I've got one ~3' long that will do up to ~1/2" holes.

I have a No.5, I have owned it since the early 90's when I used it mainly for race car fabrication. I don't use it much these days but I am glad to have it, one of my favourite tools.

yup,

Its for a pedestal mounted snail punch. We have a few of these in the shop and they are wonderful tools.

The punch looks like a heavy duty c-clamp with a corkscrew/ball bearing operating shaft with dies mounted inside. That huge handle allows you to pull through 1/4" plate with a minor tug.

Ill get you a part number sometime so you can see how big that punch is.

I have a couple sets. First set was from my grandpa. It was a required tool in the sheet metal trade. I picked up another set from a member here. Handy when needed.

I picked up a #5 kit like the one in original post at an estate sale, but haven't had the chance to use it yet. It's from the 70's, I think. It's sitting in my toolbox waiting for when it's needed.

Not only do I have a Whitney punch and its metal box. Note the 1/8" dimpling die.

I have the modern "equivalent" in its plastic box. Note I had to stake the pins (red circle) with a center punch, it came apart during its first use.

The two of them together show a certain similarity of design. :lol_hitti

Learn something here every day. I've owned a couple of Whitney's forever and didn't know they made the larger sizes and didn't know they were still in business.

Not a Roper Whitney, I'm guessing this is more light duty since it only has pieces for 1/8 and 3/16 holes, says 24 ga max cap. But it is a USA made Malco HP-18. I haven't used it a lot but it was handy a couple times.

I have a few and find them very handy when I have a special need. There are several models, of which the No.5 is the smallest.

There is also a modified version of a very large Whitney punch that I believe is used for some task involving metal strapping. It is modified so that in addition to the punch, it has a cutter and a sort of die that will make a 90 degree bend in a narrow, stiff piece of sheet metal.

Bobbie Brown had a different kind.

Source?

Nevermind - found it. I remembered it vaguely but it was actually hard to find on Google.

Musical duo Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston married in 1992, and had one daughter, Bobby Kristina. In 2003, Brown was arrested for misdemeanor battery, for allegedly hitting Houston and shouting epithets. That didn't stop the family from starring in their own reality show, Being Bobby Brown, in 2005. Two years later Houston and Brown divorced.

Ok, Garage Journal is emptying my wallet again. I want one of these. What's a good size for something you would use for general light duty fabrication - car stuff? Buy new or used?

Thanks,

Scott

When I started working 50 years ago the company had a No.5 and some extra number-drill-size punches. I liked it so much I bought one of my own. In recent years the company-owned punch grew legs and walked away, and since the number punches weren't of any use to them now, I took them with me when I retired.
