Do I need 23mm and 25mm sockets?

There are two gaps on my 1/2" drive socket organizer that are making something in the back of my brain itch; I have no deep or shallow sockets in 23mm or 25mm. :(

Am I bringing shame upon my garage if I leave these gaps unfilled?

In a relatively busy three decades or so of amateur wrenching, I have never, not once, ever encountered a fastener using one of these sizes.

Or should I go halfway? If I ever run into 25mm, a 1" socket would probably work and be slightly sloppy. But I have no solution at all for 23mm, so maybe I should just get those.

I eagerly await the wisdom of the GJ Hive Mind.

I have yet to find a need for either so I wouldn't worry about it. The fact that I know I have all the odd metric sizes somewhere, when looking at metric stuff these days, I look for sets that skip those so I don't have more pretty much useless wrenches. I'm sure you will get examples from others where these are used, but unless you own one that they name off, I wouldn't worry.

23 on a 2015 Pacifica rear upper camber adjustment.

Leave it to a minivan to change your life. Now go get both before ya lose anymore sleep over those missing sizes.

20, 23 and 25 are like bigfoot. You hear about them, see pictures of them, but are not likely to encounter tone on a Tuesday

Only used 23mm once; Replacing a Honda EU2000 inverter generator timing cover, and the crank bolt/nut was 23mm. Bought a 3/8" 23mm impact socket "for next time" which sat unused for 3 years and then went to Ebay.

Never, ever, friggen ever use the word "Want" when discussing tools.

The proper word is "Need" and should be used with modifiers like "desperately" and" Horribly" placed in front of it.

If our wife's were to see this type of thread it would be the end for many of us.

Pay attention man!

I use my 25mm wrench on steering tie rods at times. But it is a DOE and not a socket. In the shop we have used a 23mm but not often. I cannot recall what needed it.

Unless you choose to own every tool ever built; omitting those two sockets would be a good place to start.

I've used 23mm several times and had to go and buy singles since my sets didn't have it. So yes, worth having.

So, 25mm is 1.4 inches?

Wow, you have supported your facts well.

7/8inch is
. 875 inches
Minus . 75 inches
Equals
One tenth of an inch

Subract
.1 from the 1.4 inches you say
And
That means
2mm(25mm-23mm) is 1.2 inches.

Did you post that just to be argumentative?

I think he screwed up his units. they are .73mm and .4mm different respectively.

What kind of socket organizer? Is it one of those Hansen's that make you buy sockets that you don't want or will never use?

I ask the same thing about an 11 and 9 mm socket all the time. One I don't have and the other I have never used.

Yes, it's a Hansen, the one with a size marking on a little stick in the middle of the socket.

This is in 1/2" drive, by the way.

Based on the few sightings in the wild, I might just have to get a deep and a short 23mm. If I ever see a 25mm fastener, I guess I'll just use a slightly sloppy 1" on it.

I have 20mm sockets. Never once used them, but they're there. As mentioned, I've heard of using them on swollen 19mm lug nuts. (And using 23mm on swollen 22mm.)

Maybe I can put oxygen sensor sockets in the 25mm slots so I won't feel quite so itchy when I look in that drawer.

I'm not sure which is more irritating; The empty peg or a permanently new socket sitting there while everything around it wears in.:lol_hitti

Best thing I did to avoid filling pegs was switch to the Ernst rails, but that was due to moving into a service truck.

I use 11mm all the time in place of a 7/16", never seems to be a shortage of 1/4"-20/28 hardware no matter what I'm working on.

I'm with you on 9mm though. Never used any of mine, IIRC.

A 23mm is. 03" bigger than a 7/8" socket.

In the real world 7/8” and 22mm sockets are interchangeable same for 3/4” 19mm. ( most manufactures use blanks the same sockets with labeling changes on the 19mm). Many lug nuts 19 and 22.

As for 23 25 never use them.........same for 15,16,18 and 21.

8,10,12,14,17,19,22 are used every day .....13 on older Japanese bikes.

I have a picture of a list of sockets I need to fill my trays on my phone. If I find some tools that are clearance or close out, I get my phone out and look at the picture for reference of what I need.

I fill the gap with a discounted price. . . . kinda like 2 birds, one stone.

I have yet to use my 20, 23, and 25 mm wrenches and sockets other than as an in between size for dealing with rounded fasteners.

No kidding. my ram truck is half metric and half sae. really ? drives me nuts.

No kidding. On the LX/LC line the only sae fasteners are 4, 3/8" bell housing bolts to the engine and two 7/16 back to the trans and then alll the remainder are 10mm for the pan and starter connections. Can't tell you how many times I've come across damaged bolts and threads when some yahoo decides to install his own converter for the first time.

Used a lot on Mercedes as well, coincidence?

11mm is common brake bleeder size, although that isn't normally socket territory.

Oh ya, for a few years damn near all the underpinnings were swapable after Mercedes helped get mother mopars **** together in the suspension and trans department.

Personally, I would buy them both as soon as possible. According to Murphy's Law, you will need one or both of them at 10pm on a Sunday night in order to finish a project and you won't be able to get them until morning. Besides that, the cost for 2 sockets shouldn't be all that much, unless of course it is one of the "higher priced" brands of sockets.

Restricting tool purchases to things you might need takes a lot of the fun out of it.

Seems like some people have used them and some not. If you are not going for pricey sockets why not fill them in and make your world right
