23mm can come in handy when dealing with rust swelled capped lug nuts, 22.5 usually does it, but not always.

Yup, when these things swell.

I think that you are asking the wrong question... The question shouldn't by "why should I buy them", but should be "why shouldn't I buy them".

The assumption should be yes.

When you use them you will never say, "gee, I wish I didn't have these"; but you will certainly say "how come I didn't get these" when you need them.

If you got an itch, scratch it. Sounds like it bugs you a little seeing those gaps. I say fill em. At least you won't be bugged seeing the gaps any longer.

I looked at my 25mm and 23mm. Both the shallow and deep 25's have been used quite a bit as the inside finish shows it. The 23 shallow has some light marks on the inside finish. The deep looks like it may have not been used or very little. I don't even remember what I used them on. I bet I was happy I had them when I used them. I also like having my Hansen's completely filled. Makes spotting a missing super easy.

There are two gaps on my 1/2" drive socket organizer that are making something in the back of my brain itch; I have no deep or shallow sockets in 23mm or 25mm. :(

Am I bringing shame upon my garage if I leave these gaps unfilled?

In a relatively busy three decades or so of amateur wrenching, I have never, not once, ever encountered a fastener using one of these sizes.

Or should I go halfway? If I ever run into 25mm, a 1" socket would probably work and be slightly sloppy. But I have no solution at all for 23mm, so maybe I should just get those.

I eagerly await the wisdom of the GJ Hive Mind.

Yes.

What kind of socket organizer? Is it one of those Hansen's that make you buy sockets that you don't want or will never use?

Here's a good one for ya... Snap-on now offers 3-row Hansen socket trays, for short, semideep and deep sockets. Their 1/4 drive metric tray has spaces for 4mm and 4.5mm semideep sockets.... that Snap-on does not offer!

Trying to remember which car, I think it’s my VW that has a 23mm 12-point crank bolt...amazingly I actually had the socket. Then lost it by the time I was ready to put it back together and had to buy another. Now I have 2 sitting on a rail in my box.

Bought a 1" socket way back when to use on the 25mm drain plug on our 84 Volvo. 25mm socket was not readily available.

I personally don't care for having things I never use and I wouldn't recommend going out of the way to buy either 23mm or 25mm until you have a definite requirement. HOWEVER, as others have written, you will need one or the other late at night or out in the middle of nowhere so if you're channeling your inner Boy Scout, buy them and "Be Prepared."

Not much help there, was I?

not subscribing to the OCD driven rage for filling pegs on a worthless Hansen Rack since i don't own any but, it might be better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them in some cases :dunno:

I know i work on a ford, GM, Chrysler, with a few Hyundais thrown in fleet and i've never used 23 or 25mm sockets in the last 11 years. I use turbo type sockets for those pos charger acorn sockets that fail.

I use my 23mm several times a week. Anyone who lives in the midwest knows how lugnut caps rust and swell up. The 23mm socket works perfect for swollen 22mm lugnuts.

MasterForce 23mm regular and long sockets were acquired at Menard's this weekend and slotted satisfyingly into place. If I encounter 25mm, I'll dig out a 1" socket from my "inch ghetto" drawer in the back.

I really don't like that Menard's went to Chinesium for the MasterForce sockets and wrenches -- the US-made MasterForce stuff was much better. As far as Chinese stuff goes, they're certainly on the high end. But that's another rant for another thread.

Eh, I'm sure they'll work fine if by some freak chance they're called into action. For sockets that will most likely sit in the rack untouched until my baffled heirs auction them off, they're plenty good enough.

But.

I also just noticed that my 20mm regular and 11mm deep slots are empty too. And the itching is starting again... I guess I was distracted by the larger sockets.

I think I might have used the 20mm deep once -- it's some oddball auto parts store brand, so probably an "I need it now" purchase -- but I have no recollection of why.

I've only ever used 11mm when I was too lazy to dig out a 7/16". And I do have 11mm sockets in 1/4" and 3/8" drive. I have no idea why you'd ever use a 1/2" drive 11mm socket.

No.

You can safely skip sizes at the larger end and these two are it. You need 6-22, 24, 27, 30, 32, 36....Maybe add a 26 but only at a stretch.

Working on Jap and Euro cars, this has been my experience.

Nissan use 25mm for Crank bolts. So too do timing belt\water pump. You will need it. Some uses on Fords. Dodge. Volvo. Just some that I have ran into.

Couple observations on some newer Dodge trucks, Moog outer tie rods ends were a 25mm on a '14 1500. Nothing else fit. One of the power steering lines was also a 20mm (exact fit for the wrench).

The bolt locking the table down on my drill press takes a 23mm wrench. 7/8" doesn't fit and 15/16" is too sloppy.

I have a concrete trowling machine that is entirely metric. The bolt and nut that couples the two piece handlebar is 25mm. It also folds there for storage. I use a 25mm wrench on one side and a 25mm socket on a breaker bar for the other. Funny thing is, I just bought 25mm for the sole purpose of eliminating skips.

Ya never know when a certain size will pop up. Might as well buy them.

When I bought my first metric sockets, I could only afford them one at a time, and not knowing any better I bought a 18mm. With some experience, I muttered about it, 17mm and 19mm were the common ones. 40 years later, when I realized I didn't have a 1/2" 18mm deep, it was a must buy.

My 1972 Husqvarna 250 had 25mm nuts on the drive sprocket and flywheel/magneto. Don't think I ever used a 23mm but I do have it.

As a hobbyist I’ve never seen either fastener size. But I have both shallow and deep in 23 and 25 in 1/2 drive for a couple reasons:

1- I’m setting up my cart with vim mag rails and if in the future this becomes a common fastener size, then I don’t want to rebuy and recut new mag rails. If I have these two then I’m 100% certain I’ll be covered for every socket size 1/8” to 1” and all metric between. So I’m future proofing and they don’t take up too much space nor are they too expensive for me.

2- OCD

3- they might be useful for rusty fasteners off size possibly in SAE

Come to think of it there’s a handful of /32s SAE below 1” that I don’t have. I think it’s too hard to find them since no one really makes stuff like 17/32 anymore so I gave up. . But 23mm and 25mm is aubudant and easy to get.

I’m missing the following in 32nds: 13, 17, 21, 23, 25, 27, 31

I use 23mm several times a week on Mazda BT50 and Ford Ranger diff plugs, can't remember ever using a 25mm socket.

One of the things I learned on the vintage side is where the 32nds came from, USS sizing of bolt heads. USS was used before SAE. Don't forget the BSW sizes, either. You more likely to come across them then USS.

Went for years with those pegs empty on my Hanson trays, that doesn't bother me. I'd never buy a socket just to fill an empty peg. But a couple months ago I ran into a Cadillac with those POS tin covered lug nuts. Here in the salt belt, rust swells the lug nut under the cover, only thing that would work was a 23 MM. Luckily I had a 23 MM deep 3/8 dr impact socket I picked up in my travels for next to nothing. I've since added a deep 23 mm 1/2" dr impact socket.

Those were seriouisly swollen @ 23mm. There are a few companies that make 19.5, 21.5, and 22.5mm sockets specifically for this issue with crappy lug nuts.

I use 22and 24 regularly at work. I just purchased extras of each and put on the empty pegs. No more empty slots to see every time I open my box.

24mm is really standard size, it's for the 16mm bolt. Like the 15/16 for the 5/8 bolt. The sockets interchange.
