Do I need poly on gel varathane varnish

Hi all.

i just put some gel stain on the stairs. I’m wondering if I have to put poly on top?

advice or ideas appreciated.

I would say , yes, several coats. you want a good wear layer to protect the stain and wood.

I agree with Cobbler. The stain only colors the wood. Lightly sand with about 400 sandpaper then wipe with a tack cloth to remove the dust. Apply several coats of a poly or oil based flooring finish with the sheen of your choice. Varathane and Minwax both make good quality floor finishes.
