Hello, I have recently purchased a home with a garage floor that was previously coated with some type of epoxy coating and a good portion of it is pealing up and just generally looks like ****. I plan on renting a "diamond brush" finisher from Home Depot and was told by them that this tool preps the surface of the concrete for a coating. I do not plan on re-epoxying the floor but was told that I would need to put something down to protect the bare floor. So my question is; do I need to seal it with something (and what) or can I leave it bare?? I live in Wisconsin so salt from the winter roads ends up on the garage floor so I am thinking I would need some type of clear sealer. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It would be a good idea.
After going Through that level of preparation. I would certainly consider putting down a clear epoxy sealer.

This will last longer and look nicer than a standard water-based clear sealer.

I agree with Scotty. You are 3/4 of the way there with that kind of preparation. Putting a sealer down is much easier than the floor prep and will protect your floor in the process. How much protection is dependent on what kind of sealer you apply however.

Thank you both for your quick replies. I am now in the process of finding the best sealer to fit my needs. I am looking over the advice that both of you have given to others and will make a decision in the near future. Thanks again for all the expert advice that you so willingly share here.
