DO I need to fix this????

Oh man...finally getting around to finishing my work bench, which in turn will allow me to clean up and organize my garage

I went to attached the first leg and this happened.





There are 4 other screws holding the leg on. DO I need to fix it, or can I leave it???

Pre-drilling your holes when close to edges will prevent this

If you want you could squirt a little wood glue in the crack, remove the screw and clamp the 2x4. It would look better if that matters to you.

Fudge it bro. Wood glue or wood fill with dust/elmers school glue mix. Better than nothing/taking it apart. Then just file it down if necessary after it dries.

I'd remove the screw, glue and clamp. You could also run a screw or 2 in from the side (predrill of course) to hold it tight. Then reinstall that screw.

If you leave it it like that the split will only get worse.

I too would squirt some glue in there and clamp it. I hate when 2x4's do that. Its always that 3rd time I don't predrill. I can get awY with it a couple times and then wham! Last screw , most visible, out of wood to replace it, out of time , etc.

I agree with the gluing and clamping. For the next wood project when using screws, get a set of these for pre-drilling and counter sinking holes.

I'd replace the whole board. Looks like you have a nice split next to the top screw running up the board. Any heavy pounding and it's going to open right up on you and go all the way to the bottom.

proper full depth pilot holes from the right side.
fill with wood glue.
draw it together with screws.

forget about it. It would have likely held up just fine had it been a 2.5 x 2 anyway.

This will happen a lot when using a corded drill to put screws in. One will have more control with a cordless drill/driver. They stop when the trigger is released.
