If I have a tap and die set, do I need a thread chaser set? Thanks Rich...

Thread chasers do not cut new threads. They simply clean and reform existing threads. If you use a tap set to chase old threads and there is a chance that you will remove some of the existing thread which makes the threads loose. This may not be a big deal in some cases but others it's not a good thing.

I would say you should have both.

Anytime a tool question comes up as "do I need it" the answer is yes. Just take a tour of my garage full of unused stuff!

In this case I would say it depends on how often you will use them. Tap and dies are made to cut threads. Thread chasers are made to reform threads. In other words not cut into the threads. If you have a bolt hole that was already threaded and the threads got buggered up from whatever and you use a chaser you will basically just push those threads back into the right place in order to make it good again. If you use a tap you will cut into the messed up threads removing more material making the threads weaker.

That being said I don't have a thread chaser set. I have wanted one for a few years now and always meant to pick up the craftsman set(kastar rebranded) 48 piece which was the best deal but I think they stopped selling it and only sell the 40 piece set now. The times I've needed to chase threads I've just used my tap set. Someday I will have the money to buy all the tools I "need"!

You really do. I have "chased" threads with dies before, and it usually does too much damage. Get them.

Congrats on the gets, but if you have to look that hard to find a place to put them,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you need a bigger tool box

You not thinking big enough if there is no room in the current box you buy another box for just threading tools, and then proceed to fill it. If you are going to go into debt buying tools you have to do it right.

I don't use my very much but when I do they sure do come in handy. They aren't that expensive and they sure can save you a lot of headaches.
