Do I really need a 40 micron filter for my compressor?

I was reading this article:

That 40 micron is fine for general purpose. I will use my compressor for impact wrench, air tools, bike tires. No sandblasting or painting.

I am concerned about a 5 micron filter plugging up. The Norgren I am looking to buy has same flow for both filters.

Also, will a 5 micron filter pull more water out than a 40 micron, or only contaminants?

forget about the 40 micron. A 5 micron filter is a standard general purpose filter size for darn near all compressors. its the .001 and smaller micron filters that plug up, but thats what they are designed to do. get the 5 micron or anything that says "general purpose" filter on it. they are for condesate, particulate, and heavy slugs of compressor oil. 5 micron will not remove vapors, or aerosols.

According to ANSI/ISA 7.0.01-1996 Section 5.2:
"A maximum 40 micrometer particle size in the instrument air system is acceptable for the majority of pneumatic devices. Pneumatic devices that require instrument air with less than 40 micrometer particle sizes shall have additional filtration to meet the particulate size limit for the device."
