Do I Save It?

So this old Prentiss model 50 was in a garage of a house we bought. It's in ok shape except the corner of the slide is broken. Otherwise the handle, screw and jaws are in good shape, just needs to be refinished. I really don't need it but I hate to toss it, I love that it says made in new york. Should just get rid of it but for some reason I can't. What would you do?

I would use it as a beater vise. It may have a reduced opening limit but few times do you need full opening width.

As another New York guy, I would keep it. I doubt we will ever see a manufacturing resurgence in this state.

I'd keep it. I've seen vice restorations on utube. Not easy or quick, but alot is possible.

Tossing it would be a shame imho.

If you have no use for it I am sure there will be someone who does
maybe even here or just give to Habit etc..

Spray bomb every surface, load the screw with heavy grease and bolt it to a post outside your shop. Use it for the really nasty grinding, cutting and welding jobs.

You need to keep it.

I would consider that a legacy vise - it is a part of the house's history.
Think of all the projects and memories associated with it.

I would keep it and try to incorporate it into the garage work area somehow.

Good, it looked for a minute this was one that would require a Garage Journal intervention team to be sent out. There are about 12 things that will trigger one. Not trying to fix use a tool that may not be perfect but is useful is one of them.

Agreed, yes a sin to toss out potentially good tools, lol. Found this one in the basement, cleaned up and painted, I'll have to paint the Prentiss to match.
