Do stem walls get coating?

Hi guys,

I need a second opinion please. Hired a pretty reputable epoxy company (good Yelp) and overall it seems they did a good job.

But they didn't clear coat stem walls so they look and feel different from the floors (more "edgy") and some flakes are already falling off.

I emailed them and got this response:

We don't clear coat the stem walls - the polyurea would drip down and cause major issues - you will have very few chips that fall off from the stem wall. The clear coat only is applied to flat surface - hope that makes sense.

I really don't know if it makes sense. Polyurea is already applied to the floor so I don't get how drippings of the same coating can cause major issues.

Does it make sense to you guys?

I recently coated my floor, and stem walls with a different product, Hellfire. I coated the stem walls, and indeed the metallic did run down the stem wall, and "puddled" in a couple places on the floor. Not really a deep puddle, just the metallic looked different. My experience may be similar to your installer.

I'd paint the stem walls if they are concrete or block, or apply a penetrating sealer if they are brick to stop the flaking.

We usually don't coat stem walls. We recommend our clients do the floor first and at that time paint some epoxy on a piece of cardboard for color sample. If they have enough epoxy to do it after the floor then great, but often stem walls **** up a lot of epoxy and there won't be enough left over so just take the cardboard sample to a local paint store and buy some color matched enamel and paint away. The walls see no traffic and don't need epoxy or clear coat.

Getting flecks on vertical surfaces too is often challenging.

Problem is putting clear on vertical surface. As it cures it warms and runs down in a puddle. I will be painting mine same color as floor
