Many years ago I put a tempering valve on the stool. Now we are having temperature swings down stream from it(I think).I cannot determine if it is the T/V or the pressure balance in the shower valve as they are in the same line and close together.

tempering valve on your water heater/boiler/furnace? yes, they can go bad. if you have the normal type with a little bent-over wing-nut style adjuster, you need to "exercise" it occasionally or it will get crusty/pitted with scale and deposits.

you should re-ask this over in the plumbing section - where plumbing people hang out.

i've no idea how to test this. i just replaced my tempering valve because it ooked and felt like **** (and was 20 years old) and all was well agterwards.

Has anyone had a tempering valve go bad? I flushed my w-to-w plate exchanger with vinegar Friday night and now my hot water temp is fluctuating. It was flushed in place so the tempering valve would have gotten vinegar through it.

Is it common practice to rum tempered water to a stool in your area? That's the first I've heard of that.

When I remodeled the house I was single and had no intention of using the A/C so I put the T/V on it to stop the stool from sweating. With time come changes:lol: so it may be time to just take it out.

I suspect T/V are not used much around here because most people do not know what they are and most have A/C and therefore not much need for them.

Every mechanical device ever invented is subject to failure, and I've caused most of them to fail at one time or another myself. My Dad used to say, "Phil, you could break an anvil".

As far as using a T/V for a commode? Wow.

People sometimes use them so the water in the toilet tank isn't so cold, to prevent the tank from sweating in humid weather. My dad put one in their house when I was a kid, it made a big difference.

Depending on the valve design it could use a bellows to regulate the water flow. Think single handle shower setup ( thermal mixing valve). Bellows could be leaking or sticking. Most likely replacement as I see a rebuild kit as most likely impossible to get. Try find one first.

I bought a rebuild kit for mine, only to find that it lacked the needed part.
I ended up buying an identical complete valve & putting all the guts in the soldered-in valve body.
