Do they make what I am looking for?

I thought this would be easier to come by than I am finding. Or maybe I am just not searching for the right item. :dunno:

But I have what I think is a standard two gang outlet box (see pic below). The holes for the two outlets are spaced 1 13/16" inches apart. And what I'm looking to do is mount the L6-30R receptacle in the middle of said 2 gang box. I can find outlet covers that accomplish the look I want but haven't had any luck finding the adapter necessary to mount the receptacle to the box itself. I thought I'd easily be able to find such an adapter but I haven't had much luck. Maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing or looking in the wrong spot.

Does such an adapter plate exist (I have to imagine one does) and if so can anyone on here point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

I'm not aware of an adapter to do what you want to do. I had the same issue when I wanted to mount my HD toggle switch for my compressor in the center of a 2 gang box. It was a metal box though, so I was able to modify a metal mud ring. Making a plate that connects the left and right screw holes will be tough, because the drywall not being perfectly flush will want to twist the plate. How about a flat 2 gang mud ring?

How about cutting a hole in a blank metal cover.

I considered this but I'd still need to be able to affix the receptacle itself to something, especially with the twist-lock application.

That is essentially what I'm looking for but I think that adapter plate is made for the style box I have (the holes are spaced too far apart).

Except that's not what I'm looking to do... I want the single outlet centered.

Not sure if this will work with the box you are using, but I did this same thing a week or so ago - but I’m using EMT and my boxes are surface mounted. The idea though is that the outlet actually mounts to the cover, not the box.

I think the hole spacing on this plate is too far apart but that's essentially what I'm looking for.

I have metal boxes but they and they have the plates you are looking of at HD

I ask at Lowes and the guy there said he didn't think he'd ever seen what I was asking for. Now that said, I'm sure we've all encountered that guy that just started last weekend who has very little knowledge vs. the retired electrician who might work there part time that knows everything. I'm not sure who I was dealing with, lol.

I appreciate all the suggestions. I may just have to make my own adapter, which really wouldn't be very difficult. I just need take a piece of aluminum and drill two holes top and bottom to match the existing box holes and then drill two more holes in the middle to match the holes of my receptacle. I guess I'd still need some additional holes to then mount the face plate but regardless it would get the job done. Ultimately I just needed a different style box but at the time I was running wires I didn't know what type of outlet this was going to be.

...........

You might be using the wrong electrical box for what you are wanting to do... seriously it is easier to just change out 4x4 box a single gang mud ring then what ever cover plated you wanted.

but of cause your googlefoo is still weak :)

Is your box mounted sideways? Or just rotate this 90 degrees. Plug mounts to plate and plate mounts to box. Note screw spacing in each direction. White finish on steel.

Thanks dogdog and bczygan, that's what I'm looking for! I had considered modifying a blank steel cover as others above suggested but I just wasn't sure mounting the receptacle to the face plate would be strong enough for the twist lock. But since that's exactly what the above plate appears to be designed to do I have to assume it will be fine.

This won't be an outlet which is accessed frequently. In fact, it's likely it will be accessed very, very rarely. It's where I am getting power for my two-post lift and it's mounted in the ceiling.

And alfredeneuman, it's #10/orange.

I have to question why you're using what appears to be #12 wire with a 30A outlet?

I know what youre thinking but #12 NM-b is yellow. #14 is white.

but if you look closer, you will notice the nm-b is actually orange (#10), most of it is covered in white paint or sheetrock mud...

It maybe easist to buy new box with desired cover, drill holes in back of box , and mount to existing.
