Lieing is a source of trouble and drama. I hate trouble and drama.

She knows Im a cheap SOB. In fact, shed probably tell you Im one of the cheapest SOBs alive, especially when it comes to buying toys/tools/etc, so when I do buy something (every week) she has no problems with it so long as I dont fill the garage. Auctions are a regular shared activity with us which we both enjoy. Buying new is a waste in most cases, and she knows I dont do it unless necessary. Yup, she's great. :rocker:

Random thoughts:
does she ask permission to buy shoes?
Is this a trick question?
Do you, or does she expect you to be a handy guy who builds and fixes things?
Did it hurt to have your balls taken out?
Why be married to someone you need to lie to?

she may not understand your tool needs. if you are a mechanic on any level, you know what you need..if she doesnt like it, then she can go away..my ex used to bust my *** over tool purchases.. and I wasnt buying truck brands, or in debt..but it was ok for her to buy expensive shoes and cosmetics..."lipstick on a pig' at least my tools worked for a living, and still do. dont ask for "permission" buy the frickin tools to get the job done, and do it brother!!

We have seperate accounts so we can do whatever we want with our own money. We also split all household expenses 50/50.

If this is a legitimate question then it is already to late.

I have no one to tell about my purchases so take this as you will. Although I can say that if you have to lie about them, and she still have not noticed the money gone from "trading up" then you have a gullible wife, or one that is just going to let you continue your lie because she has one of her own. I keep no secrets and never will, telling lies is a good way to get your *** in a bind and I for one do not want that.

My go to lie...I need it for...fill in the blank. Actually I am up front about what I buy, and tend not to buy things I don't have a need. With all the projects and things I do, she really doesn't question my spending on tools. Then again, I keep it in check and fair. I try to make sure she gets stuff for her as well.

I just got to buy a pair of Knipex end cutters because my wife needs me to trim a wiper blade refill to fit her car, for which no direct replacement is made. They are expensive pliers but I said "honey, I need it for YOUR car." :D

My wife knows if I need it, I need it, and buying it usually saves either that much money over taking it to a mechanic, or my sanity in the garage from not having to half-*** something anymore.

Thankfully, she also knows that you buy cheap **** over and over, but you only buy quality once.

I like that excuse. Sure, you could go to HF and get a $2 pair, but you could also buy something nicer that you still "need" for the job. Almost like "stretching the truth". :D

man this post looks like I could have written it/ except that I did fill up a garage and a shed and starting on another garage....
I used to work for an auction house long before there ever was an Ebay.
I have been buying tool truck brand tools like crazy here lately replenishing "lost" tools from my sets over the years in prep of starting a new job here within the next week.. I am going back where I belong, and that's wrenching/ shoulda never left. the greener grass on the other side was all weeds mainly ones that hurt to walk in like thistle... (nother story)

but the "cheap" is showing, as all i gotta do is show here MAC tools' site so she can see what I would otherwise "have to" pay, to fill in my missing stuff...

yup.... though I have not quite finished the lesson in American made vs Chinamade we're part way thru that chapter, she's seen what happens and how pissy I become when my cheaply bought tool breaks and has to be replaced multiple times to complete a simple task that I can't afford "cheap" tools.... especially when my tools put food on the table

If bills are paid, theres food on the table, a couple dollars get put in the ol' coffee can for a rainy day and a couple dollars get stuck in my sons piggy bank at the end of the week I/she/we can spend the rest on whatever we want. We have a joint account and joint savings account. However, money made pulling wrenches on the side is totally mine. Its exclusively my beer, cigars and tool money.

I have never once said "hey babe, is it ok to buy some tools?" or hid a purchase to avoid a fight, etc

No need to lie at all, just learn to speak their language. Just walk in and say in an excited voice "Look honey, look what I got, I saved $100.00!!!"

The retail world knows about this too. Look at a flyer. All the big prices say SAVE $299.00! (in small print at the bottom is the cost that actually comes off your credit card). This is how women see the shopping experience, they don't spend money they save it.

Just try it next time, you'll see what I mean.

My FIL was an auto body and paint man for 45 years. Did side jobs at home for friends and family. My wife grew up understanding that guys need tools , and cars. She has never questioned any car purchase I've made either.

My ol' lady knows what I do with my tools. She has never questioned it. As long as the bills are paid, she doesn't care, and would rather me by tools that I can use on our cars or around the house than something else. In fact, she bought me a Bosch CS5 circular saw that I've been wanting for Valentines day. :rocker:

Over 30 years of marriage has taught me and wifeypoo to practice,"non-communication skills".

A cpl years ago she comes home with 3 ____ing bent wheels on her Subie hotrod. To this day won't tell me anything but...."beats me" on how they got bent.I straightened them on our 3 axis wheel machine.

At LEAST a 1/2 dz,"didn't see" the mailbx, tree, parked car,etc all requiring my bodywork skills.

Chit,I could go on all day with the dumb stuff she won't 'fess up to.Point is,she knows that I'd get even more pi$$ed if she told me the truth.....So,just as well she lie about it.

When it comes to our shop equip.......I used to say she didn't know a milling machine from a tablesaw, but that ain't so anymore, gotta be more careful there.Always can use the excuse its a customer's,in for rebuild but then she wants money so,don't use that one.Usually just come up with a real good lie and tell her to mind her own business....she'll get bent, then get over it.

Wife really doesn't care!

Have UPS, FedEx trained, and they leave the packages down by the lower garage, and don't ring the bell. So when I go down to the garage, the pakages they are waiting for me!

I am quite blessed in the fact that my gf, who I live with, has two uncles that are mechanics, a dad that is a mechanic and a grandpa that owns a shop. She understands the deal with tools, I have told her I'm on the tailend of things I really should have and everything else is to make my job/life easier.

The girlfriends gonna need tires soon... Maybe I can upsell a tire machine, and balancer....

She used to get pissed about dropping coin on tools... or anything really other than her. Then we got a house and now it's as long as the mortgage and everything else is paid and there's money being saved, have at it....

Now if you really have to lie to a woman about your purchasing theres 1 of 2 things happening.... She's a control freak and you need to lose her or set her straight; or you're out of control and in denial about it.... Either way...

We have seperate accounts so we can do whatever we want with our own money. We also split all household expenses 50/50.

Used to be like that until she quit working to stay home and take care of the kids... The theory is still sound but by the time I'm done paying all the bills 100/0 I got a whole lot less left over for toys.

Mine has no problem with anything I buy. This goes for both of us, if it's $500 or under we buy it, over $500 we talk about it.

Generally the gist of what goes on here as well..she's a big girl, I dont bug her when she buys something and vice versa. I cant say I've ever LIED about buying a tool...but I can say that I've taken some home and quickly stuffed them into my toolbox...for example I did that last with a new Bosch SDS Drill...she knew it was new, and asked me...I told her the truth and that was that.

I just got to buy a pair of Knipex end cutters because my wife needs me to trim a wiper blade refill to fit her car, for which no direct replacement is made. They are expensive pliers but I said "honey, I need it for YOUR car." :D

OH ya, the best/biggest/tool purchases come from workin on their projects. I'm trying to figure out the "well honey you know all those tools I've bought for YOUR projects, well thats why I need a new Macsimizer MB1350" angle to get my box. I have the "its your money do what you want" permission, but it was followed up with "you know the economy *****, might be better to have it in savings" line after....translation...not a true green light.
