I have recently started haggling with my SO guy. I figured it's worth the try since I'm a pretty good customer and he seems easy to deal with.

Recently I bought my cordless impact from him. Regular price was 579$ plus our wonderful 15% salestax. I told asked if he could do any better. He pulled out of the calculator and said "Ok Greg I can do it for 525$ tax in since you always pay cash" I said ok that's a fair price.

So he took off over 100$ if you include the taxes.

When I bought my torque wrench it was the same deal, he took off around 50$.

I always try. It makes a guy really pissed off that always pays cash get the same price deal as the flake that never puts any money down, rarely makes a timely payment and carries a high no interest truck balance to boot and drags paying out several months to a year.
What do you have to loose, The worst they can say is NO, (and they cannot even say that until asked) , Then say " Thanks , but NO Thanks" if they won't come down in price and let them know that you will have to Waite and get another quote from another tool truck. They will soon get the message and come around to where they will give you a discount with out asking. Show them your new tool bought elsewhere next time he stops in.

Our shop has four trucks that stop buy weekly. Competition can be a good thing....H

If by haggling to mean calling him a jackass and asking there the F my replacement tools are and why he won't answer his G-D phone... then yes, all the time!

Ah, the old curse-the-seller tactic. How's that work for you? D'you get lower prices that way?

If you pay cash and purchase semi regularly, ask for a cash discount. 10 % is realistic.

Gregster 15%sales tax :shocking:

You have to pay for those folks going to the doctor with a scratchy throat somehow, right?

Oops maybe that was too political :)

Do I haggle with him when I put stuff on the R.A. Not usually. He has been pretty good to me and my brother. Try to get him to throw in something here or there(socks). Did get a long screw driver set for a bit less due to the fact I paid cash. I would rather pay a bit extra to have hands down excellent service. I can pretty much call him and he will swing by.

My bro got a tool cart for 600 cash that listed for 750+.

I have a small business and absolutely hate getting beat up on price. Does it mean that I go around paying full price for everything. No, but I'll pay extra for service.

Local Mac truck has a Martin horsecock that I *kinda* want & readily admits it's been on his truck, unsold, for over 5 years. Told him when he wants to take $25 for it I'll give him cash.

I haggle somewhat. I have two local SO dealers. One is standard 10% off when you pay cash. The other always discounts on big items. Depends, I guess.

I'm thinking that tool truck distributors should give people a 10% discount for paying with cash in full; if they can't do that, they should at least eat the tax.

The MAC guy must have an intimate personal relationship with it, if he won't take $25 for it, after hauling it around for 5 years.

The one shown sells for $41 and change.

I don't deal with tool guys normally since I don't work in a shop, but who doesn't haggle anywhere they can? Heck, I'll haggle with the walmart manager if I can (works great on clearance stuff). Worst they can tell you is no. Some places have given up and just give me a better price knowing it can make or break me doing business.

For the guys that are paying cash and in full, are you getting the standard 10% discount off of the tool price AND tax, or does he take the tax off completely (on paper) and then takes off 10%, or does he calculate it some other way?

I'm just curious what most truck dealers are doing.

Thanks.

I ask for a discount, but don't beat a dead horse if they don't give discounts. I just buy elsewhere.

OTOH the Snappy guy I see is real nice about all kind of warranty stuff etc., so I cut him some slack and might be willing to pay full price if I ever get around to buying something new thats Snapon. ;)
