Do you hang hand tools?

I see a lot of nice garages with tools hung up. I only hang stuff that you wrap up or coil up. I get it from my dad. He always had at least one roll away with everything in that.

I guess most people don't have the luxury of a nice big home workshop where they can wall hang everything. Certainly if you tried that in the workplace, the tools would disappear pretty rapidly I'd imagine!

I think it makes things look cluttered. I like my hand-tools in a box that I can secure if needed.

I hang a lot of frequently-used tools above my bench. It's a pain in the neck to have to slide open a drawer when I need a screwdriver or a pair of cutters.

I keep the stuff in drawers that are used for longer projects.

I also keep different stuff hanging above different benches. In my case, welding clamps are above one. Hammers are above another. General-use hand tools are above another.

But it depends on what you're doing in the garage. If you're only working on your car, then a rolling tool cart is the way to go.

For the most part no. I do have machine specific tools near the machines but most of the tools are in the tool box, or the back porch, the kitchen counter, the pickup, the tractor, the barn, the old shop, probably most anywhere but hanging on the wall.

I used to hang everything in my garage but because the garage is not heated,the tools soon become rusty. I then thought hey why not put them into a tool box but that rust is a tricky monster!
I try to hang a few things and put a few things in the tool box;I guess best of both worlds. Now in my old age (only 21 cough,cough) I use a ton of Bear (large mammal)grease on all my tools it keeps the rust at bay.

Speaking of rust I think the weather pattern has gone off its tilt/axis because I have never seen this much rain in all my many years! I think I saw a duck in my backyard.

i keep my tools in my boxes,but i do have a pegboard wall with odd ball stuff and my old raised panel wrenches on there..i think it makes a garage look like a garage

I have a lot of free wall space that I could hang hand tools on but only use a small part of it. I hang clamps, hand saws, levels and squares and I also have a small wall rack above my bench that has miscellaneous tools (mostly screwdrivers) that I don't care if they grew legs. Anything I give a **** about is either in my box or cart or for power tools, in a locked cabinet. That, for me helps with both organization and security. That, and too many tools on the wall I feel looks cluttered, though I have seen some wall setups that do look damn nice. As a rule, not many people besides trusted friends and family ever step into my garage but for the few unknowns that find their way there, I want as little temptation in their field of vision as possible. some call me paranoid. I think it's just common sense!

I hang some tools and keep others in my boxes. It really depends on the tool, how often I use it and where I use it. Some tools are easier to store in boxes while others are easier to hang, and are actually manufactured with a "hang hole." I have a home shop, and none of my tools are exposed to friends, strangers, etc., so I really don't have to worry about tools disappearing.

I know this might sound a little obsessive, but I NEVER create, drill or add "hang holes" to my hand tools. I like to buy used hand tools too, however, if a tool has a previous owner added hang hole, I won't even consider buying it.

Pretty much all hand tools that will fit get put away in the boxxes. I have a double sided tool board / a-frame setup on wheels where all the odd items that belong to the shop and get used by everyone hang. Large pipe wrench's, cheater bars, framing and drywall squares and levels (for fab projects), grease guns, fish wires ,lifting brackets for specific jobs --all that sort of thing.
All c-clamps / welding clamps hang over the bench in the welding corner of the shop.

In my attached garage, yes I do.

I have a pegboard over my work bench which has an assortment of go-to tools (hammers/mallets, hack saw, prybars, striking screwdrivers, pliers, pipe wrenches, utility knife, a few files, awls and scribes, wire brushes, tape measures, squares, metal rules, drill bit guide, drill guage, screw guage, bolt guage, magnetic pick up tool, and a few Sharpies.

I have another pegboard next to my work bench which has an assortment of small engine repair tools and parts (T-handle hex drivers, nut drivers, torx drivers, spark plug sockets, ratchet, breaker bar, extension, chain saw files, a miniture grease gun, spark plugs, air filters, fuel filters, trimmer line, and v-belts).

I have a third pegboard above my power equipment bench with an assortment of power equipment tools, small power tools, grinding wheels, wire wheels, polishing wheels, cutting discs, grinding discs, drill bits, reamers, saw blades, etc.

I love pegboards and use them to take the load off my tool cabs and chests and support key work stations.

This is a small fraction of what I have for boards. The empty spaces bother me, but eventually I'll fill as many as I can.

I greatly prefer hanging to boxes and drawers.

In my basement and back shop where there are no prying eyes or visitors, I have tools and other stuff both hung up and stored in boxes and bench drawers.

In the front garage I don't like to advertise, so everything stays in a box or behind a cabinet door.

I recently just hung my hammers up. They were too thick in the drawer and hard to just grab quickly. I also have grinders, clamps, chipping hammer etc. hanging above the welling table. It's easier to grab with gloves on.

I've always worked in a shop area as an electrician. I found it best to keep tools used daily on pegs close at hand. When I worked on relay and control panels for BPA, we had the racks mounted on rotisseries, and I worked from a roll around cart with one drawer for tools. What tools I needed would be on the top of the cart.
Been doing a lot of welding in my garage and open tool storage is not working. Everything is covered with a layer of greasy metal filings.

Somethings just have to be hung IMHO! For example levels, framing squares, most of my welding tools ie. clamps, 16" Channel-locks, welding apron, hood, and garden gun! Anything that might require FAST access to! YMMV.

I hang cheap tools that I wouldn't mind walking away in the garage and in the farm barn work area. That way when my wife or one of her customers needs something and I'm not around they can use/loose those tools. Good tools are in the box locked and carrry the key with me.

One pegboard over my main work bench and one over the woodworking side to hang levels, squares, etc.
The main one holds 2 sets of SAE and 2 sets of metric wrenches, screwdrivers, pics, hacksaw, tape, etc. All the other tools are in the boxes. I don't have to worry about "walking tools" where I live and like to have fast access to the basic handtools.

At one time I did. I work rough and tend to put some musscle into my projects so I got tired of things fallong off the wall and onto me or my work surface. Now there are way to many tools to do that. Last time I had a good size work shop I had a 18' bench and over it was pegboard not attached to the bench in any way. That whas where the odd tools lived. Things line screen spline installers, gromet tools, Sperm Whale oil (yes, I have an old bottle of it for some reason).
Reality is I just have too much of most things to have them out. I spent a decade doing remodeling and building mechanic work. If I were a typical around the house handyman I would have everything hanging for quick access. It is a very nice way to work and takes little floorspace. High end production enviornments use kaizan management where the tool is outlined on the wall where it is stored. very easy to spot if a tool is missing!

I don't have nearly enough tool box. And if I did, it'd have to be a huge tools box--but those are a pain, because you can't easily see in the upper drawers, so then you're forced to go wide rather than tall. Floor space is always at a premium, while wall space is usually ample.

I have a couple sets of wrenches in my tool box that are my go-to wrenches, but I have a couple full sets of wrenches on pegboard--3/8-inch to 1 1/4-inch. Everything bigger than 1 inch doesn't physically fit in my tool box to begin with, so those MUST go on the wall. I have three or more of every other size wrench so I don't have to keep searching during thrashes, or so my friends can wrench on one side of the car and I can wrench on the other at the same time.

Pliers, screwdrivers, sockets/ratchets, punches/chisels, ball pien hammers, tin snips, specialty tools, chassis tools, slide hammer, dollies, etc. are all in the box.

My huge channel lock is on the wall, because it just won't fit in the box, and I've got four adjustable wrenches on the wall as well, ranging from small to very large, that I use for bending flanges around a radius on sheetmetal when fabricating.

I also have my body hammers on a rack outside the tool box, and the big hammers too, because again--they don't fit in the tool box. I also hang my ruler, tape measures, speed square, machinist square, etc. on the wall.

If someone is going to steal my tools, they're going to take them all whether they're in the box or on the wall.

I like having tools hanging. But, when I was in college and worked in a shop I locked all my tools in my box. Now that I work only in the garage, I hang all my wrenches.

Only things I hang are c-clamps, bar clamps, spring clamps and hand saws.

Everything else is in a tool box, shelved or in a storage bin.

I have a "**** bucket" where I need to find a place or home for things, but hanging tools means you work in a shop alone with no-one to pilfer, or is the cheap-man's way of saying I can't afford another tool box.

It's effective, but again, less than practical unless you are a one-man shop, hardware store or retailer.

I hang the **** that doesn't fit well into a tool box. barclamps, levels framing squares and such. I got three different tool boxes in the shop and each one is for a specific task/setup. Auto/truck repair, electrical and general remodeling. and still got **** stacked on the work benches. I've gotten much better about putting stuff away when I'm done with it. Makes life much simpler.
