I have an old weller soldering gun and it is excellent if the new ones are as good as the old ones i buy one for sure. As long as you dont buy a cold heat than you should be ok.

I've used one of these for years:

I prefer the trigger to the "constant on" variety. I'm assuming that you mean electrical soldering as opposed to plumbing soldering?

If this is primarily for automotive wire, then get a soldering gun like the one pictured above. They heat up to full temeperature (and cool back off so you can set it on anything) in about 5 seconds.

If you'll have to to detail stuff with it, like re-solder a resistor on a very cramped circuit board, then you'll need a small 15w soldering iron as well.

Neither one will cost you very much money. ;)

I have the Weller shown above.

If I had to buy another I'd probably buy a harbor freight model, for $12.99.

There's a lot of stuff I would not buy Chinese, but for something like a soldering gun I would. I have a harbor freight heat gun which cost $10. It lasted about 2 years and then stopped working probably because I dropped it a number of times but for $10 I can deal with that; I just bought another.

I use an inexpensive 15-20w iron from Radio Shack on my circuits, but a gun like above is best for any wiring over 16 ga... IE- a car!

Yes, the 'gun'-type is the kit I'm referring to.

I have an older Weller gun that I picked up at a farm auction for 5 bucks. I would highly recommend that for most crude soldering. I also have multiple Weller irons along with some cheap irons but when it comes to real electronic soldering I much prefer my Weller Solder Station and my Hakko solder station. The solder stations control heat much more accurately and have much more power to get good solder joints.
