Lately trying to make room in my box and cart at work I noticed I could save some space leaving torque wrenches out of there boxes. Anyone else do this?

They are always in their case. Only one not in a case is a craftsman beam torque wrench. I treat them gentle. I have 2 kobalts(a 3/8 and 1/2 older usa) and 2 gearwrench( 1/4 and 3/8 flex head both usa). Plus the craftsman.

Always in case. They're suppose to be precision instruments.

You always need to set them to Zero. They have a spring which will loose its tension and it will loos accuracy if not set back to Zero.
For what they cost it should always be in the case if you have one.

In the box. Except for my one crappy Craftsman which just came with some flimsy plastic packaging, it sits in the back of a tool box drawer.

Title is their (possessive). And above is they're.

Same here I keep em all in the box except one cheapo that I lend out for torqueing tires and stuff it gets beat up pretty bad but I gave ten bucks for it at a flea market years ago and it gets calibrate every year and it's never more than a ft lb off I guess it's earned it's keep but I have a 1/2 3/8 1/4 clicker that stay in the case along with my 3/8 tech angle I'm not a huge fan of molded cases and love to save room in a tool box but all my precision instruments are kept in cases

Always in the case, but I don't use them very often being a DIY guy and all. :D

Only one. Why? Because used torque wrenches typically don't come with a case. :lol_hitti If I had cases for the others I would. It would depend on the environment for me. If it is in a drawer that gets used alot, I'd probably keep it in it's case. But if it was in a separate drawer like I keep mine, no case just make sure that it won't roll around if the cart is moved. Clicker wrenches are pretty durable.

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

I lost my cases for 2 of them so out of the 3 only 1 is in a case. Generally if something has a case I like to use it except for wrenches.

Absolutely. Even though they're cheaper Hf ones that only cost me $20 for both.

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

In the case and I set them to the lowest torque setting when not in use before putting them away. One mistake I see with a torque wrench are these people jerking on it after hearing the clicking noise. You don't jerk on it and results in a false torque reading.Once it clicks, stop and the fastner is torqued.

I'm thinking about using the open space on the bottom of my cart for storage of my torque wrenches and other expensive items
But I'm not sure if that's a good idea because they won't be locked up... What do you guys think?

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

I literally just made my cart enclosed on the bottom yesterday for this reason. But I have other blow mold test equipment under there. Nothing some 18 gauge steel and hinges can't fix

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

Joe, I keep my 3 most commonly used torque wrenches out of their boxes, in my top socket drawer, stacked on top of each other in the corner, out of harms way. I use them so often throughout the day that it would be pretty counter-productive to go digging into their boxes every time I went to use them. My not so used torque wrenches are kept in their boxes.

I'm another tech... I keep my 1/2" and 3/8" in my socket drawer out of the cases since they're used often. The only one I leave in its case is my 1/2" digital one that doesn't see much use... and that one lives in my side cab anyway.

I have 4 Snap On Torque Wrenches, they all reside in their cases, in my tool box.

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

I think GTA Matt hit the nail on the head, if you use them daily, they don't go in the box. Just slows you down. You just have to find a place for them to stay out of harms way. Like any tool, tools you use often, don't get stacked under other stuff. Rarely used stuff gets buried in the bottom.

I don't use mine daily, so when a project is done, it goes back in the case.

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

Only two stay in their cases, a small 1-20NM one and a very large 650NM one. The rest (8 i think) are in a drawer ready for use. Cases take up too much box space when you have 10 torque wrenches.

Here's a pic of my cart. Its a matco msc4 I've had forever. Enclosed the bottom so I can keep aerosol cans out of sight ( if not OSHA lady t work wants them in the fire cabinet and gets pissy) and keeps my blow mold cased tools I use a lot out of sight

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

hmmm....sounds like its time for a bigger tool box:beer:
I have 4 torque wrenches. 2 are "old" that I got for free.
and 2 snap-ons that I bought new and paid a lot of dough for.
those puppies always go back in their case.
I really only use a torque wrench a few times a year depending on what my current project is.
although I did use it last last night.

Are they hinges all the way around? What type of a lock mechanism? Did you drill holes in your box?

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

Back panel is solid, the sides and the front are hinged for access. Yes I had to drill into the box to mount the hinges. Its 18 gauge steel, and I riveted the hinges to the steel but self tapping screwed the doors to the box for easy removal if necissary and used shortest screw I could. I didn't make it with locks don't need to lock it up in the shop I'm at just need a nice covered storage and a good project.
