As others indicated, they are costly so I keep mine in their case if they have one. Case or no case, the 1/2" and larger ones take up a lot of space. Mine has to go diagonal in my 26" box.

I only keep the big ones in there box because they don't fit in my box anyway. I think that as long as your shop isn't extremely dusty they are fine. I think the more important thing is to keep them stored at the lowest setting and to get them calibrated regularly.

Re: Do you keep torque wrenches in there boxes?

I'm thinking about using the open space on the bottom of my cart for storage of my torque wrenches and other expensive items
But I'm not sure if that's a good idea because they won't be locked up... What do you guys think?

The case for my 1/2" Husky USA (Matco/Gearwrench) torque wrench is too big for my cart, so that's the route I went with it. I was working in a shop with mostly 10yr+ mechanics. They were fine with just leaving their boxes open and stuff out, so I wasn't worried about theft. All depends on the environment you work in.

That said, I had an old no-name torque wrench for about 8 years that was never in a case, never set back to zero, bounced around in drawers with my ratchets, and the tension screw on the bottom was broken. Still clicked exactly where set when I tested it next to the new one and my buddy's Matco. Resilient old *******. :D

What ever tool I buy, if it comes in a Hard Case (molded for that tool) I keep it in that case. I just buy a cabinet or make room for it on a shelf. My thought is --"If the company that made the tool wanted it kept in a protective case they would include it, if not they would put it in a plastic bag and shove in a cardboard box". So yes--- I do keep them in their case-..:shocking:

No cases, I have a seperate drawer in my chest for my Tq wrenches. I am either using one of them or it sits nice and safe in its drawer. More importantly, I keep the tension at zero when in the drawer.

Kept in their cases, and if the digital ones might not be used for a while, the batteries come out and are stored separately in the cases. I've had way too many instances of burst and leaking batteries ruining tools and equipment even when the batteries themselves are barely used and well withing their use-by dates.

I have it in a drawer. I also don't worry to much if I forget too turn it down. Springs don't weaken from being held loaded they weaken from cycles. In fact the paper work that came with my matco clicky states that it's not necessary.

You always need to set them to Zero. They have a spring which will loose its tension and it will loos accuracy if not set back to Zero.
For what they cost it should always be in the case if you have one.

Yeah but the craftsman have to be turned in half way to fit in their case, pretty stupid design...if it needs to be zero'd to store, the D*** case ought to be long enough to fit the wrench in that position...

Machinists have this same problem; high dollar tools, no room for their protective cases. I have digital mics I cannot store in their cases.

You can very easily make a small section for torque wrenches, lined with foam and cut out to receive individual wrenches. Not difficult, plenty protective and more accessible without taking up the space. I use foam from a camping store used as a cushion under a sleeping bag. It is good, high density, closed cell foam cheap. You can cut it easily with an x-acto knife, glue it, just like the aircraft guys do. You could glue the whole shebang onto a thin sheet of aluminum or steel and you'd be able to move it from drawer to drawer easily.
