tens of thousands of dollars of tools = locked up. even if i go take a dump. i'm spending the extra 60 seconds to put away the most expensive stuff laying around. who knows if some delivery guy or knucklehead walks in and swipes something laying around. i've worked waaaaaay too hard to risk it.

I do every night at work. I do at home sometimes. Trying to get in the habit of doing it more often although my best wrenches are in plain view on wrench racks on the peg board. I should probably change that.

I don't even put tools away at night, let alone close the drawers to lock it. Half my tools are laying on bench right now.

I'm lucky to be in a laid back shop now with a great group. No one there locks their box. I trust the guys and have no problem leaving mine unlocked as well.

4 of us out of the 6 techs lock their box. The other two just leave their carts open with tools out an never lock their main box.

Never. I work with only 4 other guys and we all keep our boxes unlocked.
The shop is insured and alarmed, plus we are within feet from the police station.
I rather have the thieves steal some of the tools than pry open, damage my toolbox and steal some of the tools. Besides there is more valuable and easy stuff to sell stuff all over the shop.

I lock my box after the work day is done. When I go on break and eat lunch I put all my tools away that I have out and don't lock it.

Tools at work get put away and box locked every night. Even on a very late day, I'll throw all my tools in the big drawer and lock it up before I leave the building. Nothing would probably happen if I left everything out unlocked, but the last thing I want to see are my tools missing the next morning. My tools are collected/customized/fabricated over the years to fit my needs and unfortunately alot of them are not replaceable with insurance money.

The only time ill leave my cart unlocked is if someone was currently borrowing a tool. Most of the time its my drill or impact driver, everyone at my work is good about that stuff. I inform everyone or lock their box if they accidently left it unlocked. The only issue I have is when someone borrows something and you don't know.

Example:

Timmy borrowed one of my picks from my new ATD pick set. Timmy starts later than I do. I come in to work to find it missing in its slot. So the whole day im wondering who took it. Nobody asked me if they could borrow it.

If you are going to borrow something from my tool cart tell me before hand so I know. I hate finding something missing that you know you put back.

Yep, always used to lock mine, even have an shock alarm in there,it was mainly if the workshop was broken into, tool theft is big in some areas of the UK, and although there is a level of trust with your work buddies, I still would never give them the chance,
Over the years I have worked in many places, and often found roll cabs are chained to a eye bolt in the floor, and some places offered secure cages to put your gear in,
Although I keep all my gear at home now in the workshop, but I still lock it, and chain it down,
And yes I have had my tools stolen , overnight, about 20 years ago, thieves broke into a works place, and mine and 4 other large roll cabs were taken, among the works lorry etc,
At the time my gear alone cost in excess of over £4000, but the company insurance would only pay out £900.00, i lost the lot, never again, I TRUST NO ONE,
About ten years later My rollcab was found, it had been re painted and rebadged, on ebay, from a closed down car dealership, less than 25 miles away, no tools were recovered or court case,

That's sick. What people do now an days. They are just dirty. I had my car stolen. Recovered in Chicago on port a spares. Inside was all ripped up steering column and everything even put cuts in the seats "Just cuz". I found my rims on CL like a few weeks later and I was able to recover them. But never caught the person who did it.

I work from home and never close my boxes. Plus I have a lot of power tools and large tools distributed between cabinets.

I used to leave them open but now I start to lock them up since tools went missing and people just go and run through my box without my permission.

Always have mine locked unless i'm working right beside it, not because people will steal stuff, but there's one guy who will take stuff without asking and has a **** memory, often found stuff a week later on the floor. He's the kinda guy that wouldn't spend a penny on tools and constantly borrows, breaks, and doesn't replace. He went through a co workers box looking for a 5mm drill bit, found it, used it and broke it, went across to the tool place and bought one.....for himself, never replaced the one he broke. That's plain rude in my book and he's not getting any loaners from me:beer:
