You'd be surprised how many fasteners are available with Amazon Prime or even 1 day shipping. If I just need a box of some type of screw or something, its easier to order it on Amazon rather than making a special trip to the hardware store. Assuming, of course, that I don't need it right that minute.

For instance, I was installing some cabinet pulls, and the included 1" 8-32 screws were just a little too long to fit tight. Amazon had 100pc 7/8" 8-32 screws for about $5. Got delivered ~36 hours later. I don't think Home Depot had 7/8" 8-32s except for in the baggies which would be expensive for 100 of them.

Thank you this has actually been quite enlightening, I didn't expect to see so many buying online other than for weird stuff. I've been wanting to build up a little stash of some common nuts / bolts etc and will check out some of the suggestions.

I buy most at Home Depot only because it is the closest, Ace and a small local chain in town typically have a wider but still fairly limited selection.

I buy from fastenal, we get a crazy discount from my work. A bag of stainless 3/8-16 3" long cap head screws cost me 87 cents the other day.

But boxes of bolts, yeah, McMaster Carr, and if I need it "Right Now" I can always go to Fastenal and they won't have it, or they'll have a box of 5 of something close, but not right, that I might be able to make work, for the price of a box of 50 for McMaster.

But I'm not bitter or anything...

Over I don't know how many visits over the years I've never once actually managed to buy anything from a Fastenal store. I live about three miles from a storefront attached to an enormous warehouse.

So far, all they've been able to do is utter the six most useless, infuriating words in the entire English language: "I can order that for you."

Well, ****, Skippy. I can order it too. McMaster-Carr in Chicago will ship it today, the UPS driver will bring it to my door tomorrow, it will cost less, and I won't have to come back here and look at your useless carcass...

From what I've seen in the stores, I think they mainly stock janitorial supplies. They sure as hell don't seem to keep any fasteners (y'know, like in the name Fastenal) around.

yes, this is so many stores these days. I understand places can't stock everything, but if they would at least stock fondling samples. if I could go into Home Depot (or what ever) and at least hold the item they had to order that would be something valuable.

If I have to look at photos online I have the whole world to order from.

I have been in 2 Fastenall's. One in Mass and the other in NH. They had plenty of fasteners, tools, bar stock and yes janitorial supplies. I guess it depends on what sells in that area.

Yes, I agree, It is frustrating to here those 6 words. Unless they can get something hard to find or something for a very good price, what is the point of having to make an extra trip?
