I am in process of setting up a fastener storage system and am curious how often 7/16" bolts and nuts get used? I cannot remember the last time I needed one in that size or maybe I just did not notice. I could say the same thing about 9/16" but what about you?

I stock a few 7/16 and a few 1/2 in just a small selection of sizes. No 9/16

Then again what do you work on mostly, if its big heavy agricultural stuff or mud trucks, etc then yeah you should probably keep more of that stuff around. I dont

I try to stock all SAE sizes from tiny up to 1/2". Over 1/2", I keep only a few odd ones in a bucket for big jobs.
I don't keep any metric sizes on hand. I seldom have use for them, so I get them from the hardware store as needed.

I keep just about everything in stock that tractor supply has. From 1/4"-1/2" in 2,5 and grade 8. I know it takes up a lot of my storage space but a quick trip to the hardware store is a minimum 1 hour trip. Some things about living out here kinda ****, but it's a small price to pay. Keith

7/16 NC are used a lot on older ag equipment, if not for that just a small handful for "just in case" little fixes. You generally don't need them much and even less in fine thread.

I have both coarse and fine thread in 7/16. Not used all that much, but working on old cars you run across this size occasionally.

Early Ford tractors are 95% 7/16 bolts, and the few Ford engines I have been around use 7/16 bell housing bolts, and all of my GM engines use 7/16 motor mount bolts. Otherwise I could live a long time without ever needing a 7/16.

Lot's of 1/4-20 in several lengths, and quite a few 3/8's. Only enough 7/16" to do an emergency repair if I need to.

I keep a few of each size in stainless as well because I choose to use them for applications that are out in the elements.

I have a bit of M4 and M5, tons of M6 (in almost every head type, most of it stainless), a fair amount of M8, and then I taper off at M10 and M12.

Why did 7/16 bolts evolve with 5/8 on the head and 11/16 on the nut ?

Or do I have that wrong ? I have always wondered.

7/16 yes. 9/16 is so uncommon these days that hardly anyone even sells it. You will rarely encounter a situation where you need one and on the odd chance that it happens Fastenall does carry them.

Grade 5 and grade 8 ends up being a lot of nuts and bolts

I use 10's, 1/4's, 5/16's, 3/8's, then 1/2". Very rarely have I used 7/16 for anything. Even the 30 years of building dies and tooling, I hardly ever used a 7/16" bolt of nut that I can remember. About the only reason I ever had a 7/16-20 tap or thread die was to clean up the thread on the drawbar on the mill, or to clean out the threads on the R8 collets.

7/16? if I have some, it's only by accident. all my cars/bikes are metric except the firebird with uses almost entirely metric hardware.

Just the opposite here. Other than my daily driver S-10 everything we own is SAE. 2 Harleys, a 67 Camaro, 80 Trans Am, 56 Chevy truck, etc. Although a handfull of the body bolts on the TA are metric. Gotta love GM in those years using both... GM is fun. 2 bolts on the alternator. The bottom long one that threads into the block is 3/8x16 the top one that threads into the alternator is 8x1.25mm :dunno:

I have my own bins at home, and keep a good selection of all common lengths in 1/4" - 1/2", including 7/16". I also have a good number of 5/8", and some 3/4". All the above are NC, I keep just a few NF in most diameters up to 5/8", but in random lengths.

Ironically, if anyone out there has a need for 9/16" NF, I can fix you up. I have a bunch of that size in 3 or 4 different lengths, with nuts. All good quality Dorman Grade 5. Must have come out of an auto parts store closeout or something. Came to me as part of a package deal, but I have no idea what I would ever use it for.

I have always thought that they do that so you can use wrenches out of a single set, i.e. you don't have to have two wrenches of the same size. Now I know you guys all have duplicates of everything, but...

Old Massey Ferguson combines (750, 760, 850, 860) used a lot of 7/16" bolts. I always thought that was because no one else wanted 7/16" bolts, so Massey got a heck of a deal on these fasteners.

The only 9/16" bolts I am familiar with are head bolts on 6404 and 6466 John Deere engines.

SAE everything from 10-28 to 5/8
Metric everything from 6mm-14mm

different lengths of all the above, grade 5 & 8, but less of them as they get larger, minimum of 3 ea. in the largest sizes.
I bought complete bolt set's with the bins a few years ago for a super deal, and just resupply them as I use them.

I stock them and use them regularly. I picked up some industrial shelving that did not have the clips - just the uprights and shelves. I put 15 shelving sections together with 7/16s hardware I had around the shop. see 1/4 holding slide plates/guards on some of my equipment - 3/8's as well.

I'm frequently fabricating something and 1/4" or self drilling sheet metal screws are my go to fasteners for mocking things up. holes are easy to weld up afterwards.

With my old British car habit, I also stock tons of fine thread fasteners. 1/4-28 are used everywhere on my 63 TR4, but I digress.....

Well as I mentioned in a previous thread, I was a mechanic for over 15 years and now I am working in the tools and fastenings trade,

I now have a massive stock of nuts, bolts, washers, screws, etc,
Yes I have at least 500 of each and every size, 7/16 do you mean UNF or UNC. I have both,
If I was to weigh them all I would make a guess at about 2 tonnes, lol,
METRIC standard, METRIC fine, UNF, UNC, BSF, WHITWORTH, BSPT, all high grade, top quality, 8.8 or above stainless and/ or BZP, its a hards life, hahaha,

I have 7/16" flat & lock washers. Also fine & coarse hex nuts. No bolts, however. Go figure. :dunno:

There is a 7/16 carriage head bolt for every point across this header. We keep a few around for replacements.

As for the 5/8 head with an 11/16 nut, a 5/8 nut is actually standard, with the 11/16 nut. Being a heavy duty nut. But for some reason, the heavy duty nut has become standard on 7/16 bolts.

i keep a bin of each size 1/4 up to 3/4 in grade 8 UNC only. i only keep the 3/4 ones i need for the joints in my offroad truck. 7/16ths replaces the frame rivets perfectly on that truck too. 9/16ths fits the small suspension joints. gunna start working on engines this year and we'll see if i need to get UNF sizes.

9/16 is just the right size to barely fit in most old bench vise mounts. ;)

I probably would of ended up using 1/2 if it wasn't that someone left me with like 100 or so 9/16 grade-5 bolts... lol
