Do you want extra width or depth in a garage?

I would go with more depth. My garage is 30 deep and it makes for lots of room in the fron...or if you pull all the way in, you have room for a tractor etc. My garage is 36' wide and sometimes I think I should have switched the dimensions....

My shop is 24 deep x 48 wide with 2 garage doors 16W x 8 H. I would look at a another 4' to 6 ' deeper would be ideal. Cost play's a factor though in this decision as the bigger span will normally involve a truss design or laminated beams for the span. Worth checking in to though in my opinion.

Based on all the responses here is a new plan. Build a 24x32 with a 8x12 bump out on the 32 foot side. This will give me a 24x22 space to park the DD's and a 12x32 space to park the Miata sideways.
I still have to research the building plans, but does this seem better?

I went deeper after owning and working in a number of different shops.

At 30 X 36 I can very comfortably pull two full size trucks in and still have a project on the go sideways at the front. This includes a work bench and tool box along the front wall.

I vote deeper.

Everyone here seems to say depth as space to work on things.
I don't have the depth in my workshop. To pull an engine then work on it infront of the car for example.What I've done all these years is simply move engines etc to the next bay along. Also means I can open that bays door to get natural light. I actually prefer this approach now compared to friends garage which have lots of depth.

Make sure when building the garage you have the roofline going the length of you building. This way you can always add on to make it deeper in case you plan on buying more cars or a boat.

I think I would prefer to have a garage that is plenty wide for two cars and extra deep. That way if you need more room, you can put in the side door for more entry in the front.

Mine is 26 wide by 24 deep. My new garage beside this one will be 24 wide, 38 deep. I drive larger vehicles than you, but I would absolutely go deeper than wider. Also, I have a pretty good insulated 18x7 door, and I have problems with it sagging in the middle, so going to a 20ft door, I think, would be worse. But, haveing one 18ft door sure is nice to pull into.
Almost everyone has suggested going deeper. Definitely listen to this advice!

Wider - you can always turn one bay into a small shop. Deeper means you have to "stack vehicles", or have the shop at the "back wall" of the garage. But not deep enough means you need to work on the vehicle outside. Its a balancing act!

Having done both... having the "shop" next to the "parking" seems to gove more usable space. Plus... when you get that chance to buy that '39 Cadillac, and the one factor is "do you have the room to store it or not", you're not searching to find a way to rent someone elses garage space for it. Plus you have space to put in the charging transformer for your new 2021 Dodge Thunderbolt (that has room for 6, a range of 550 miles, and does 0-100 Km/H in 2.9 seconds)

Depth for sure, if you work on cars at all. Mine is 32' deep, and I wish I had another 5 feet.
