Just wondering if anyone wears latex, leather, or anything else while wrenching. I know that hand cleaners and solvents can beat the hell out my hands.

During a job I usually alternate between Nitrile gloves and Mechanix style gloves. I do my best to keep oil, brake fluid, degreaser off my mechanix gloves.

I used to ware HF blue nitrile gloves but the problem with them is they break up in shreds once in contact with gasoline, and the powder mixed with sweat is nasty.

one of my wife's friends hooked me up with a good load of Kimberly Clark exam gloves, that's game over. these are latex free, powder free medical grade gloves. i wear them all the time. i think you can get them at pharmacies.

i also i have good stash of HF "western safety" blue mechanic's gloves, i got them cheap when they were on a coupon sale, less than $4 a pair, love them.

Long black satin gloves whenever I am in the mood; oh wrong thread. I wear nitrile gloves about 95% of the time, only exception dealing with tiny bits.

Latex and Nitrile gloves drive me nuts, my hands perspire so much when I where them my hands look like I've been in the pool for hours. I did wear them every day for a week straight a while back. A long time very pretty customer called up to complement my staff and then asked me out for a date. :bounce: I accepted instantly, then she told me I would need a tuxedo since it was a formal event. I wanted to make a good impression and wore latex gloves all week long to keep the grease out from underneath my fingernails, drove me nuts, but it was worth it over the long haul

The date went well, we started dating seriously and have now been married for nine years.

Nitrile gloves if I'm working on nasty stuff. It's so nice to be able to peel them off and have clean hands!

I hate getting something on my hands that doesn't come off easy. I was using roofing tar not long ago and spreading it like caulk with my fingers. Took almost a week for it to all come off my hands :(

Costco sells them 2 boxes for $12. They are good quality and grey. I always felt weird about wearing the purple ones.

I use mechanics gloves if I'm running winch cables, changing tires, welding,..

I use these same gloves, except they are not purple. :) They work great. I do not like mechanics gloves. They are too thick and I like to "feel" what I am doing. The exam gloves keep your hands out of nasty chemicals and after you grow accustomed to them, you can hardly even tell they are on.

i can only wear nitrile gloves. although i only wear gloves for 10% of my working time. e.g. engine/gearbox oil changes, CV joints, brake fluid, A/C work etc

if i wear latex gloves my hands will swell up around any small cut i have on my hands.

I use safeskin purple nitrile made by kimberly clark.
I get them a little larger so my hands dont sweat so much.
they were for someone who works for a funeral home so they are longer and you can get futher in.
I got use to wearing them at work when working on dental equipment.
I dont know how much they cost because my employer supplies them to me.

I wear a fresh pair of latex gloves for each oil change I do. Same with diff and trans services, though sometimes I'll use nitrile. Mechanic's gloves for brake, suspension and tire work, and some engine work.

I do a lot of interior trim work, so my hands need to be clean. Plus I hate having oily hands.

I usually only wear gloves when using the parts washer. Also when working on something really greasy or landfill machines. Blue nitrile gloves for washing and brown jersey gloves for everything else.

I should have worn gloves today, sealing cracks with canned foam, that stuff is impossible to get off once on your hands

For those who don't like the plastic type gloves, I recommend barrier cream before you start any work on the engine bay, it makes grease come off easier, and doesn't get into your finger nails.

Gloves are against the rules in the machine shop class I'm taking! We actually had to 'sign off' on it!

so are loose sleeves, pony tails. machine shop is a whole different story. i watched OCC on Discovery, there was one episode the Rick guy alsom lost a finger or two because he was working something on a drill press wearing gloves, the spindle grabbed his glove and wrapped it up. he was bleeding pretty badly.

I wear either cotton dot type gloves (for most stuff) or Gojo nitrile gloves (5$ @ Napa) for when I'm using grease oil ete.. One problem with nitrile is it gets really cold and stays cold when working in winter(up here anyway).
Lined leather worked better for greasing trucks and cotton dot gloves under chopper mitts for all else.

YMMV

I try to wear gloves, but often I don't and I've cut my hands quite a bit handling metal.

I've got nitrile, leather, and some fabric on one side and kevlar or something on the other that I got from McMaster. Also some really heavy-duty rubber ones with "knurled" palms to handle metal coming off of a band saw.

I also end up thinking I like the feel and touch of my bare hands on whatever I'm working on. But I should be at least using nitrile on grease, because I'm done with thinking dirt/grease/grime/sludge is a badge of honor :)

That is true in may schools and shops. That said I wear nitrile gloves using my lathe, mill, grinders and drills all the time. The material is so thin it will tear instead of grab.

Yes, Nitrile and Mechanix. Job Dependent. I don't worry to much about getting the Mechanix Dirty. They're just gloves. I throw 'em in the washing machine, or when they're really beat I grab a new pair.

Very true, the only statement grime makes is that you are a grub! Unfortunately for me I have a rough time changing my ways and still tend to go bare hands for like 99% of anything I do except I do wear gloves when working with real harsh chemicals. I just end up spending a lot of time with clean up after the job.

Grubby or not though, I cannot see how guys can wear any gloves that are more than real thin latex or something like that, those Mechanics gloves they sell would never ever due, I think you just as well go the next step and start wearing winter snow gloves and be done with it. I am just not much of a glove guy.

We use the purple nitrile gloves in our lab, which are pretty indestructible against pesticides, chemicals, acetone, DMF, alcohols, or pretty much any petro chemical. If you do acid washing rubber gloves are the requirement though. One thing I have learned is that no matter what chemical resistant-type glove (nitrile, latex, etc.) it is, you have to store them out of the sunlight or fluorescent light. Latex gloves especially will disintegrate under fluorescents.

I wear a pair of ironclad gloves most of the time. I have a box of nitrile gloves that I use when messing with nasty stuff.
