that is how randy lost his finger at toyota and I would never , ever wear gloves

Yep...I got started as my local shop uses them. Now when I pull apart an old greasy suspension...I just throw out the gloves.
The HF ones are junk. I like the Microflex diamond grips. (Yeah..I know...my wifes says they sound dirty)

All the rubber ones make me sweat and I don't have the "feel" needed.
Brown jersy for rough work.
But one trick for dirty hands is after you have washed with what ever soap you use then use a grape sized glob of cheap hand lotion.
As you rub it in you can watch it turn gray from the grease.
Wash it off and use a little less to get it under your nails and into you cuticles.
After it drys a nail brush will work fine.
When I was in high school I worked summers as a line boy at an airport where my father was a flight instructor.
One of the mechs there would use clean motor oil to clean his hands with for lunch.
No soap, just motor oil and a rag.
It worked OK for him.
His hands were clean enough.

I have done that before with nitrile gloves now that I think of it 
It's not uncommon. It's to cover all gloves. Put on a latex glove and hold and impact socket, while you pull the trigger on the gun, you'll see why they don't want people wearing them around machines.

Can't stand gloves, I like my hands dirty. Only once have I worn them and that was while re-taping the handlebars on a Tri-bike. There was multicolored mold and all sorts of **** all over the place that just about made me want to throw up. Other than that, my hands are black with grease every day.

I have done that before with nitrile gloves now that I think of it
A guy i used to work with once grabbed the socket on my impact gun while wearing latex gloves when i was holding the gun. I told him to let go or it'd all end in tears. He just laughed..
..and cried after i gunned it.

Where I work we have a glove rule, you must wear then 100% of the time. FWIW I'm a HVAC mechanic.
I personally hate this rule with a passion. I was a tinner for 7 years, I've learned not to get cut and in all that time I've never gotten a cut that needed more than a bandaid, though I could probably count on one hand the number that did need one.
I do wear gloves if it's really cold out, or if I'm handing something that's very hot, and of course harsh chemicals. Seems like in the past though I've been cut or had close calls more with gloves than with out.
I agree gloves are safer sometimes, but not all the time. I'd rather have a cut that might need some stitches vs loosing a finger.
Needless to say though 99.9% of the time my hands are used bare.

While i prefer to not wear gloves, i also hate to be dirty, so really depends what i am working on. At this point i am mostly working on a car with less than 1000 miles on it, so i can work on it and stay clean. Of course cutting metal, welding etc, i always throw on gloves. Mill work, about 90% no, but there are times that i have on a mechanix type gloves just to keep the shavings off my hands. When i did a lot of older cars, and more repair type work the cheap blue HF gloves are what i used more than anything. No matter what i wash my hands constantly though ... either to get the powder off from the gloves, or to clean my hands before i put them back in gloves etc.

I was surprised at the benefits of latex or nitrile gloves: I got the keeping hands clean thing before I started, but the improved grip, protection from hot oil, and protection from small nicks and scrapes made the gloves well worthwhile.
