My garage is usually no showpiece but I keep it picked up but it does see a good amount of dirty work. Receintly I have had it turned upside down while I've been doing a "makeover". I'm doing built in cabinets, correguated metal bottom half, new white pegboard upper half, paint, can lights, etc. Tearing out perfectly good stuff to put in new and fresh in an attempt to satisfy my ocd side. Anyone that comes over here lately has just sort of been puzzled as to why I would do such a thing. :eyecrazy:

At least you guys understand. Thanks.

Most people can't understand why we do what we do to our garage. Even I thought I was nuts until I stumbled upon this site and found others with the same ailment.

That being said, most visitors to our house ask to see to see the man cave. I never sure if its to admire or scoff in some cases, but most people leave impressed (and mine is in the bottom 5% of most of the garages on this site).

The day I cleared 15 ft of air for 30 some feet on a '72 Arctic Cat Puma they determined I was more than a bit crazy. When I went back for more, their observations were confirmed. Then I cleared the same obstacle with a Dodge Dart.

They think I am certifiable crazy, but then again, when they have problems, who are they going to call. The other day the waterpump on my car failed and the tow truck driver asked me if I do side jobs. :D I had to let him down easy.

Since I was about 15....i've heard things like:

"someday you won't care about wrenching so much..."

"when you have a house, there will be too much to do..."

"when you get older, your garage will be full of boxes and decorations too.."

Finding this site only made me sure that THEY were all crazy.

I found an interesting gender divide when I was building my shop. I tore down an existing two-car attached garage and replaced it with an 1800 sf 5 bay garage/shop. During the process women would come over and always ask the same question. "Is this all going to be garage?" Always asked in a perplexed manner like why would someone do this? In fact one neighbor lady would always say "Oh I know that's what you're telling the city. I got ya, wink wink nod nod. You're secret's safe with me." In true male fashion the men would always comer over and say "nice." It didn't seem strange at all. Some would ask about a lift or tools or the electrical but nobody asked why. So maybe it's a gender thing rather than a mental stability issue. Of course many men and women would probably agree that the opposite *** is crazy.

Some things I am fussy about, some not but my main objective is to keep the place cleaned out and organized enough to go to work when needed without having to move one thing to get to another.

When I was younger, a lot of friends thought I was crazy. Now that I'm older, they just think I'm eccentric. In a few more years, they will just think I have dimentia.

My friends think I'm off my rocker. But the garage has nothingto do with that, and I always remind them...birds of a feather......

All my friends know how organized I keep my garage. They also enjoy coming over to get ideas for theirs.

At work, my employees either love it or hate it. Fortunately more & more are coming around to realize the value of organizational OCD!

Ha, I was thinking the same thing before I found this site.

most people think i am crazy because i rather be in the garage whether i have a project or not.

Yupp, get funny looks and laughed at by friends, family and neighbours when I'm relaxing in the extremely cold or extremely hot garage when I could be in the climate controlled house instead.

You’re not crazy and probably the guys all those that say you are come to when something is broken or they need help. We are the sanest people of all if one of the worst things we do is tinker in the garage just think of all the real crazy shiat you could be doing instead, been there, done that, got a t-shirt.

Those who are OCD about organization like me don't think I'm crazy, those who don't care about organization do think I'm off my rocker.

I don't remember who said it initially, but Alton Brown of the food network is fond of the saying, 'Organization will set you free.'

My wife, whom I love very dearly, thinks I'm a little bit crazy. She doesn't see the appeal of, say, an epoxy floor over a concrete pad versus "just" a concrete pad. But it's horses for courses -- she recently built a mudroom in our house, where we probably spend less than 2 minutes a day going in/out of there. Regardless, she made custom cabinetry for it, and we tiled the floor instead of just putting down linoleum or carpet (carpet probably a bad idea in this climate.)

I spend many more than 2 minutes a day in a garage when I'm working on things, so I would like to have it look nice! She saw a fellow GJer with a relatively moderate garage that had an LCD TV on the wall and she just about laughed out loud. Little does she know... :)

I like to go out in to the shop and just sit sometimes just for the solitude. After being in a tractor, combine, swather for most of the time i fill claustrophobic in crowds or even in the House .

I do this every day when I get home from work. Just go sit in there with a few brews and think about what I am going to next in there.

I go in the house for one of 3 reasons . I need a shower , I need food , I need to sleep. Other than those reasons if I am at home I am most likely out here in the shop and yes I am sitting here reading the Journal and watching Sons of Guns on the 32" LCD in front of me :D.

I have friends who question the need for "so many damn toools". They might make fun of me, but where do they come when their hammer/screwdriver/plier combo won't replace a T25, T27, or T30 that is needed to change the third brake light on their truck? Everyone needs a crazy friend that just happens to have tools and a lift.
