Anyone have experience with these?
I can get a lower and upper of these (both about 30" wide) for $40, brand new condition.

Are these shop suitable/heavy duty enough to be worth an hour drive?

Or are these similar to ikea kit furniture grade?

Ikea grade. Hell no. Think about the daily abuse they see. These are going to be built like a brick house, or a POS (point of sale / register) desk. VERY heavy. It is probably fiberboard under the mica, but not MDF. It'll be the heavy stuff.

I have a dental cabinet, and it is like a white wooden Snap On chest. Ok, so the drawers won't hold 50lbs, but they're also really small.

The question is whether or not the configuration works for you.

There are different grades of melamine, the normal material for those type cabinets...

Ok! So they are well suited for the purpose.

They actually look identical to the ones in the video you posted.

If they're listed as laminate cabinets they might not have any melamine in them at all and be quite durable. Two friends of mine run a custom cabinet shop and they sometimes build "laminate" cabinets for doctors offices and every surface needs to be laminated with a certain grade of HPL. Regardless, they're likely at least a step above Ikea.

There was a thread on GJ in years past about laboratory grade cabinets. Might look that up.

I don't know if I'd drive an hour for just one upper and one lower but then again I do have access to a full cabinet shop.

Doctors normally don't use Cheap *** cabinets in their office..

Haha, go to a military hospital or troop clinic.

'Skilcraft' or "Lighthouse for the Blind" GSA catalog specials... complete with the Chinese turnlock fasteners to hold it all together.

In fact, most of the WHITE HOUSE is filled with the **** too, only the televised areas and ambassador suites have the historical furniture pieces.

P.S. I have passed on the cabinets.

The 2 year search for hardwood kitchen cabinets continues... Damn it.

I think you made a good call passing on those cabinets. One of the things we build a lot of are Dr offices and medical facilities. We are always taking down cabinets, and they are typically just hammered, one of those good from far, but far from good things. The amount of use these cabinets get daily is amazing.

Just bite the bullet and build your own, its pretty easy, and fairly cheap. Since you are in central texas, hit up McCoys, they have great pricing on Baltic Plywood/Russian Birch. Face frame material is very cheap depending on what variety you use. There are tons of door manufactures in central texas area, so you could buy the doors cheaper than you could make them yourself.

Good luck!

For shop cabinets one could just rip down Baltic/Russian/Finnish birch plywood for face frame stock. It makes for a nice look. Make doors out of the same material and put a slight radius or bevel on the edge for a very cool look, IMO.

My wife works at the local hospital here. She called one day and said to bring a truck and trailer. They're re-doing the 3rd floor and all employees have dibs on the cabinets. I picked up 2 truck loads for me and a couple of my friends.

They are very well put together and very heavy. Now, they're full of all my stuff in my shop. In my opinion well worth the effort.
