Documenting my garage build

My garage isn't bad but felt super cluttered and not very put together. I pretty much moved in March of 2017 and shoved everything into somewhere it fit and left it. The formica work bench and some of the shelving was already built.

I want to make it classy, put together and functional. I've spend the better part of fall and winter sorting and getting rid of stuff. (dealing with FB marketplace people is a PITA...) As well as putting up some shelves.

Also ordered the 44" HF tool chest to build into a 2nd work bench once I take the formica one down.

Garage is used for my 24 hours of lemons car and '76 280z turbo mechanic-ing.

Took down most of the stuff on the wall and started patching holes. Pitches the couch to get some more space - I'll probably replace down the road.

Think I settled on a color scheme and pattern and suddenly realized its the very close to the Lions scheme...

I like the color. I am trying to decide if I want to do some kind of multi color on my shop walls. It looks good.

I really like the idea of some color - Every garage I've ever been in has been grey or off white. I picked up the bright blue HF tool chest too.

Yea, I thought I would add some blue in the floor of my current shop. On the new one I think I will do a border on the wall more like what you did.

What's your team? I was running 24 hours in a red Jetta in 16, 17, but our team fell apart. And I didn't race this year.
Looking to get back into it. I need to find a car that I want to build ...

Yea, these are the tiles from Bigfloors.com. This floor is flat, so no drain anywhere. If the slope was complex (like multiple center drains), it might be an interesting installation problem. There is some flex between the tile interface, so it might work just fine, but I have not tried it.

Beer and Jelly Beans 1999 Mercury Ecto-Cougar, as seen in the 2018 April Joliet and October Gingerman wrap up videos... Won Judges Choice in April!

We started building the car last year and finally got it to the 3 races this year. Planning on making those 3 again this year.

I can agree with that.
We got a vr6 Jetta for free. Turns out those vr6 engines are costly to repair. That why we ended up disbanded. When I do it again I'll do with smarter. Not just doing it to do it. If that makes any sense.

Got the work bench dismantled and the the new toolchest from HF.
Planning on making an L work bench in the corner.
Going to build the tool chest into the new work bench.

Looking good. Love the Z. Perhaps consider something under the tool chest to separate it from the concrete floor. You could set the whole bench/cabinets on some PT 2x so you're not messing with height/alignment issues. This would also protect the bottoms of your legs from moisture.

Awesome! Building the car is half the fun of racing it. Do as much research as you can for parts and issues. We found out after the fact that 1999 Mercury cougars pretty eat bearings and hubs as snacks. Messaged a few other teams that run contours (same basic car) and they confirmed. Tacked on $200 to the price of every race.

What tracks are you going to?

I believe he means pressure treated dimension lumber, 2" by whatever (4",6" etc).

Love the progress. Nice work bench, and I see u went with a torsion box style top. I have one on my assembly table. It’s amazing the difference in rigidity u get by simply sheathing the bottom of a bench like that. If it works for airplane wings it will work a work bench.

I also agree with point of getting tool chest/bench off the concrete. You can also use pieces of plastic cutting board under the corners/legs. It cuts easy with wood working tools, it’s cheap, it won’t rot, and it will only raise bench thickness of cutting board.

I’ve used hdpe before for assembly surfaces it’s awesome stuff. I’ll take a look at it once I get closer to moving everything away from the wall to paint.

I made my first torsion style work bench a few years ago and loved it (based on plans from https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/how-to-make-a-work-bench/ ) I have abused it tons and it keeps surviving.

Got my sockets off the work bench using an idea from the socket organization thread.

Very happy with the clean up and amount of stuff the 44” cabinet could take on.

Hardware and extension cord organization finished today as well as the always important bottle opener.

Not sure if extension cords will stay that way - not a very clean look but better than it was before.

Been a while since I made any real changes but finally got some time over break to work on it- pulled everything away from the wall, spackled the wall and put wayyyy too many hours into painting its 90% there but couldn’t wait to share it.

Nice my former team and I were not gluten's for punishment we built a BMW E36 granted it was a 318i Automatic but we quickly made it a 6 cyclinder and 5 speed.

Nice space you have to work with. Did majority of our build in my small garage or in driveway/paddock.
