Good morning guys, I am going to rebuild my transmission in my Dodge Ram 1500. One of the special tools in the OD section compressor. I can't find one to rent and will not pay $95+ when I cam fab one up for next to nothing. Does anyone have one of these? If so, could you post up the dimensions of it? Many thanks in advance!

I have the Miller one. I will post the dimensions tonight when I get home if no one else beats me to it.

Mine is the actual Miller tools part number 6227-1.

The OD of the round ends is 4"
The ID of the bottom round end is 2.990"
The total height is 5.050"
The top plate thickness is 5/16"
The bottom plate thickness is 1/4"
The uprights are 1/4" thick and 1" wide

The spring that is compressed by this tool has over 800 pounds of pressure on it, so make sure the tool you build is strong enough.

Let me know if you need anymore information.

I made one with a section of schedule 40 pipe. Cut a slot in the side to allow snap ring plier access. I put a chunk of bar stock across the end and compress the spring in my press. Just use the diameter pipe that fits the retainer.

Mr onetwo, have you been able to do this tool. did you repair the transmission in your truck?
Which transmission You have, or you had.
Some time has passed and you didn't show off the results. Now I face this challenge.

I made the exact tool described and it worked perfectly. This was for the OD section on a Chrysler-Dodge A518 / 46RE transmission. As stated before, be very careful when messing around with that spring.Get an ATSG repair manual or FSM if possible.

Thank you for your answer.
Of course, I am already equipped with the ATSG manual, I also have a deLuxe kit with transmission parts from transpartswarehouse dot com and instructional videos from transsmisionbench dot com.
I think I still have to buy snap rings kit, I'm not sure if they're included in a Deluxe set.
Have you also changed solenoids and the rest of the electronics attached to the valve body, and transmission, like output sensor , etc?
I'm starting to make the OD compression tool.

Thank you for the information. I already have a set of parts purchased from websites that I wrote above, now in front of me dismantle and repair.
today I did on the lathe lower ring and upper disc of the compressing tool. Tomorrow, as time allows, I will make three vertical supports and remain only welding.

:bounce: If I make any language mistakes, do not hesitate to correct me. :bounce:

The Sonnax kit is an upgrade, not a rebuild kit.Corrects many of the problems associated with these transmissions.Good luck rebuilding your transmission. Intimidating at first, but if you are methodical and careful it can be a very rewarding process.Remember clean, clean, clean!

In mechanics I prefer almost laboratory purity, precision and no hurry.
This is my tool :bounce:

For those of us unfamiliar with the transmission, how are you actually compressing the spring?

I'm not sure but the press which I used for compressing the OD spring did't have more than 4 tonnes
Check this part:

Besides, the entire repair process is stored on my channel. Left to record video with test drive, but now I can tell that all is OK

Sorry for the lack of comments but I was really focused on work.
I did such repair for the first time in my life, I was time limited because I rented a place in carshop for a limited time, I had to deal with recording video, and most importantly, I did't want to damege anything.
