Does 12-24 female threaded rod exist?

I would like to use epoxy to inset female threaded rod into wood, so I can use #12-24 x 2” machine screws to attach metal brackets to the wood.

Does such a rod exist?

I am limited on diameter so long nuts will not work.

I would prefer a minimum of 3” of female threaded rod per attachment point. I'm hoping that I can find longer pieces that I can cut to length.

I appreciate any suggestions on where to find such a thing.

I've never seen a whole "rod" length of that. How about a coupling nut? Still too big diameter? Pretty oddball thread size, gonna limit options. Regular 12-24 coupling nuts are only 3/4" long. Here's a 1.5 inch long 12-24 coupling nut, could reduce diameter on a lathe...

Hard to drill a hexagonal hole in wood so OP wants to bond a round metallic piece with internal thread. I don't think any such product is commonly available, so he will have to make it himself. The use of 12-24 screws means tap drill size of 0.175" so closest thing would be a #16 bit at 0.177". Thread OD is 0.216 so no way they need 2" inside, IMHO 1" would be plenty. So, the way I would do this (even though OP is not asking) is to buy some 3/8 6061 or 6063 rod and cut to 2" lengths. chuck up in a lathe and drill #16 hole 1 1/4 deep and tap 12-24 with plug tap 1 1/8 deep (if it will reach...and should). Now you have someting closed on the inside end (so epoxy won't squeeze into the thread when inserting into the 3/8 hole).

12-24 is only 0.030” bigger than 1/4-20. That’s only about 1/32”. There is a lot more stuff available for 1/4-20.

Having more threads than a common nut doesn’t add any strength, so why bother threading so deep?

McMaster sells steel tube with an inner diameter pretty close to the tap size for most threads, so you could press in a piece of tubing, drill it to tap size, then hand tap it.

There is a good selection of brass inserts with threads on the outside that will thread into wood, but in 10-24 or 1/4-20.
I would rethink the thread selected.

search this .......12-24 isn't popular. Pic from Mcmaster-Carr.

Fantastic - first I have heard of them....so off into google land to look for sources
So there we go: a list of various sizes includng 10-24 and 1/4 20 complete with flanged out end.

IIRC OP mentioned that space is a problem so IMHO that makes those fantastic threaded in inserts could split the part.

Sounds like lamp parts....not exactly high strength

You asked what female threaded rod was. . So here you go! (Best i could find in 2 mins)

It was provided so the OP has something more to search with to find other possibilities.

Suitability determination is on him.

Why do you feel you need 3 inches of threaded insert to hold a 2 inch long machine screw
I am using the 3 inches of threaded insert as a strengthening rod for the pieces of wood they go into. The 2" length of screw isn't necessary I suppose but I figured it could only help stiffen things up.

Sir, I thank you! I switched over to 1/4-20 thanks to your reply and was able to find exactly what I need while using someone else's search suggestion. Thanks!

Thanks everyone else for the suggestions as well.

Thank you! Switched over to 1/4-20 and your search words helped me get what I needed.
You don’t want that.

For wood you want EZ lok like #occupantrj listed above.

They are available in 12-24

You might want to seriously consider a few 1/4" socket set screws
https://us.misumi-ec.com/vona2/mech...&utm_term=set screws&utm_content=Screws - Set
to plug the ends inside of inserts. If you are going to use epoxy adhesive you will need to place some in hole (not easy!) and press your insert in place - that will tend to squeeze from the walls of the hole into you insert - so the little threaded plug will keep it from getting inside and fowling the thread.
