Does $1500 sound reasonable for block-work?

I just got a bid for the block work on my garage. It is a 22'x36' detached with a 16' garage door and a 3' man door. We agreed on one course of block above grade, so 5 courses total. He will put in the rebar and j-bolts. I will be doing the trenches and pouring the footer.

His quote was for $970 for labor and I can get 420 blocks for around $1.00 a block from Menards. So I am figuring around $1500 for everything.

I thought this seemed cheap. He works regularly with my brother-in-law, and I have seen his work. Should I keep looking for quotes or should I jump at this and save myself the hassle of calling every mason in the book?

About $2.00/block......not bad especially if you've seen his work. 420 blocks is alot for a newbie. Does his price include sand and mortar? A bag will get you about 42 blocks laid.....I guess 10 bags of mortar (type M) will run about $100.00 + cost of 2 yds mason sand. I would go for it even if it didnt include the mud. Save your energy for the build....for the litlle things like dampproofing when he's done. Good luck.
