Does a messy shop indicate sloppy workmanship?

I have seen some dirty shops that did Great work and some hospital clean shops that did crapy work, so it may be better to ask around people that have used them before

I've worked in places that were 5s'd and lean manufacturing and while it was nice and organised it doesn't mean the quality of work is great. I've worked in shops that had been in business for 60 years and kept everything and had piles of **** all over. The guys were old school and had years of experience and really knew what they were doing. It took a while to find something if you needed it but it was there somewhere! Took a little longer to get things done trying to look for tooling but the work was top notch.

There is definitely two types of mechanics. Ones that prefer a neat toolbox so they can easily find all their tools, and ones that prefer to leave their tools in a big pile so they can easily find their tools

When I'm in the middle of a project the tools in use come outta the box and go into a big pile. After the project I reorg.

Says nothin about how they use the tools tho.

Messy shop means more time spent on customer products then cleaning up...

I've seen killer product leave shops that looked like a tornado went through it.

Our place gets messier and messier until Saturday when the little fat lad from across the road comes and tidies up! Then it starts to get messy again.. until Saturday comes again!

i try to keep my shop clean, its so much nicer to work in and find tools, and safe ect. but sometimes you just get in a crazy mad thrash and things get messed up for a few days.

We've got a machine/ race / mechanics shop nearby called Briggs.

The shop looks cluttered, but the amount of different kinds of work they do and the quality of there work insures they will be around for a long time to come. They are top notch and make no mistake.

I do draw the line at having the clutter on the floor though. I don't mind it on the bench. But if you can't even bother to pick it off the deck my business will go to someone else.
