I've got a cheap princess auto metric set (sockets only) and giant breaker bar. I finished it out with a Crasftsman raised panel ratchet (used) and some common smaller socket sizes from Proto (used). I use it mainly on suspension work, its nice to have but doesn't get used that often, hence the budget approach I took in putting it together.

I picked up a Hazet metric set the other day from a pawn shop for $60.00. It came with a ratchet head, break bar, two extensions, a swivel joint and 12 sockets. The biggest is 60mm. This means that I now have three sets! I have to sell one at least (I'm looking at the Chinese one).

I do use them occasionally on my small truck and some earthmoving equipment I have.

I use my mish mash set quite a bit but thats on Cat D6N , D8K (80,000lbs) dozers, Cat 725 and 730 rock trucks (112,000lbs), Cat 320 to 345 excavators (99,000lbs), etc, you get the picture, not your typical family car.

I got tired (hurt) breaking no name junk 3/4 drive tools so I upgraded a lot of what I had to Wright, very happy with them so far. Its a funny feeling balancing on the end of a long snipe, somewhat of an art form, and to land on your feet and not your head when the bolt finally lets go!!

Some of the new Wright stuff, minus the wrenches.

Another former member of the 3/4" club.

While I worked autos I used my cheaper kit twice a year but could have lent it out a million times, to the same guys who refused to buy it friom me. Now in heavy equipt. repairs again the boss has 3/4", 1" and 1-1/2" mongrel sets in the shop.

All I saved was a better branded L breaker bar and will buy deep impact type sockets one day if I find them. Only in the sizes used to get the tires off the tractors. I don't need to carry all that weight for just one common task.

I bought a Princess Auto set about 18 years ago covers 19mm to 50mm and added an SAE impact set from the same store. I have a proto ratchet and 12 inch extension and a Gray universal. I have used it as socket set probably 10 times - front driveshaft nuts when my impact gun could not shift the nut. The sockets probably get used five or six times a year on the press. I think I have $150 invested and it has saved me at least ten times this amount.

When a fastener is stubborn and the impact won't shift it - needs more than 600ftlb - then i drag them out the bottom the box. I have been known to put the floor jack under the end of the ratchet handle. use the jack to apply torque to the ratchet, frequently lifts the corner of the car of the axle stand to break the nut free. I would not try this with a 1/2 in drive. With really stubborn fasteners I subscribe to the school that says the drive size should be same or greater than the fastener diameter.

It just depneds on what you do if you will need them or not.
The post are all over the place. I don't think the steel is getting any better. So mcuch is made out of scrap you don't know what you are getting even with the good brands. I know that marine hardware is all over the place. The cheap stuff goes bad and breaks.

Some have called them the ******* child. WOW you must not do much rench truning.

I have a full set in each of my shops and one set up in a road box.
I use them on my tractors. I use them on my trucks and I have used several large ones rebulding my Linclon Town car.
I have never purshcased a full set. I buy the individual sockets one at a time. I have never paid over $5 for anything under 2-1/2" socket.
All the sets I have had when buying out shops I have sold. Everyone wants matching sockets in thier sets. I don't care what brand they are. I hae even gotten 3/4" drive Snap-on sockets for $1.

You can find great sets under $200 all day long. I see them all the time for $150.
What you don't see are metric sets. They are very rare. I have them all the way up to 60mm. I paid $5 for it and it is German and was brand new.

My guess is if you need to ask if you should keep it you will never use it. If you can make money on it sell it and see what else you can find.

I have a set from 7/8 all the way to 2-1/4 in 16ths. I rarely ever use them, however they do come in handy when I have to bar an engine over, or when I have no choice but to shear a bolt off. Sometimes I'll use them for stubborn suspension work too...

i use them once a week; usually as seal drivers
they work great at bushing dies too
sometimes i even use them on stuck fasteners
but usually they sit, waiting for that one moment when nothing else will do

Years ago when I worked on heavy equipment I always wanted a set because I broke a lot of my 1/2 sockets but I never got a set. I also wanted the large sockets for pressing bearing etc. 25 years later that yearning never went away and I bought an old so ratchet and 1/2 doz sockets and soon after found a full set of Gedore. I may buy a chi socket set just to have a few metric sockets on hand (at $59.00 a set they're practically throwing them at ya) I feel light a big weight has lifted off my shoulders now that I have a set.

I think 3/4" drive is kind of a ******* child. Sure it's tougher than 1/2", but it's not quite there yet for the big stuff really.
3/4 meets a demand no other size does. Anything I need seriously tight, that takes anything from a 1-1/8" to a 2-1/4" socket, gets the 3/4" impact. A good number of the fasteners I work on are in places they could not be reached with a big ol two handed 1" impact, but are reached just fine with a pistol griped 3/4".
I've never seen a pistol gripped 1" impact.

I hope I never do.

I picked up a Gray Tools Canada 3/4" socket set at a garage sale, and was debating on whether I should keep it for that "I may need it someday" or try to sell it and use the profits to buy somethng I'm more likely to use.

I know these set are probably over a thousand dollars new, but am I even likely to sell the set even if it is only a couple of hundred dollars? It's really only *worth* what someone is willing to pay and if nobody these days buys 3/4" sockets, well then I'll proudly use it on trailer hitches, axle nuts and if I ever get that tractor to mow my tiny suburban lawn, I'll be set! :)

I use them all the time. But i have found that the actual sockets themselves you can buy cheap ones and they do just as fine as the expensive ones. Not so much for the breaker bars and ratchets. Those you go expensive on.

I bought the Craftsman metric sets a couple of months ago when you could get 14 of them for ~$30. I bought a NAPA branded ratchet (same as a Craftsman) for $45 when they were clearing them out, and I already had a 3/4" drive sliding bar, plus a few loose sockets handed down from my Grandfather.

I use the actual 3/4" drive sockets maybe once or twice a year. However the sliding bar also has a hefty piece of round stock that slides right over it, so it gets used as a cheater with a 1/2" adapter all the time.

Personally, I've never used 3/4" drive as a diy/hobbyist. It's essential for the heavy equipment (agricultural, forestry, construction, etc) at work, though. In fact, I'm surprised at how often the 1/2" stuff gets used when we just end up going to 3/4"...

I bought a box of 3/4" drive stuff at a garage sale a few weeks back. When I sold it, the Snap-On stuff inside was like gold and the Wrights did well. Selling the Indestro ratchet with no selector switch and the imported sockets was just icing on the cake.

I've got a mixed set of Wright / Proto in 3/4 dr impact, Wright 3/4 Drive ratchets, and a very diverse set of chrome 3/4dr sockets, and they all get used occasionally. Enough for me to have them around, and not be unhappy at the purchase price.

Mind you, who doesn't need more tools?

I bought an Elora 3/4" drive socket set a few years ago of the bay of fleas very cheaply, they retail here for around £800 so I couldn't resist the bargain. At the time I had a Classic Range Rover that it was used on regularly when working on the suspension arms, I now have a more modern Range Rover which is mostly 1/2" drive nuts & bolts but it does still get used on the odd occasion

I don't think its essential.I am a heavy truck tech and in all but one shop I've worked in it was considered a shop supplied tool.Mechanics were responsible for up to 1/2"dr and the shop supplied the bigger stuff.I have up to 1" myself but that's just cause I don't like digging around looking for the shops beat up gear.

I agree it has always been supplied. I was responsible for all other hand tools except the 3/4 and some other specialist equipment.

Saying that I had my own 3/4 drive set and gave it away when I changed careers. I regret it now.

Reviving an old thread! .....I had a "Chicom" set that I sold for next to nothing to make room in my tool box. That was in the early summer. I have yet to regret getting rid of them. Most of my work is on stock cars, with a little bit of light street car and farm tractor maintenance & repairs mixed in. I have 1/2" drive sets in Gray, SO & Kobalt. My Gray 1/2" dr 12pts go up to 1 1/2" and they suit my needs just fine, in fact rarely do I use anything bigger than the 1" socket. So unless you are work on heavy trucks and equipment or in industry I don't see much need for 3/4 drive tools. But if I had a Gray set I would have kept it because I have a hard time parting with anything Gray or SO, even when money is tight.
