Dont think you will find any of a small enough BTU to work well in your size. About 140k btu is as small as you will find.
Much of the cost is the class A chimney system and the fuel tank and pump.

The Eliminator waste oil heater can be purchases for under $2,000. It's 120,000 BTU's I believe. Northern Tool sells them.

Do they make one that lights off on its own like a furnace? I have All the used Diesel oil i could ever need for free, But this seems like a lot of Maint and what not.

I just took at your build and that looks great. If you have a good supply of oil I would look at a waste oil boiler. What type of heat do you have for your home ? You could heat your shop and home for free with 1 boiler.
If I ever get enough money saved up to build a big shop that is what I am going to do. I have a propane boiler and baseboard heat for the house and I would tie into that system then have the propane as backup.

No body else has mentioned this but when I change oil the waste oil is already hot. I don't need a heater for it. LOL I have enough problem keeping getting burned by it as it drains now. You have to have a big steady source of waste oil to make it worth while to get a furnace to burn it. Most use one to two gallons an hour and most home owners don't generate enough oil to keep it going. For instance a normal car oil change would keep you warm just an hour.

I use Regular Heating oil for my home, Going to look into a Pellet stove for house also. My Friends own farms, and trucking companies. Both produce many many Barrels of used oil, I would have plenty if I stock pile all year long.

On average how much do you spend a Winter on fuel oil ? Couple that with a Federal Tax Credit of up to $ 1.80 per square foot and you could have a 100% return on your investment in 3 years or less I am guessing. Here in Montana nearly all of my customers have a 100% return in 1 Winter with the state and federal tax credits they take advantage of.

One of the issues is that the oil has to be heated pretty hot to get it thin enough to spray through a nozzle efficiently. The finer the mist you can get the cleaner and more efficient it will burn. Of course the fine mist means a small nozzle, which means it will be more prone to clogging so a super fine filter is needed also.

My parents heat their shop/home with waste oil and we have I think 6 customers that do it. Everyone keeps the boiler in the shop and pumps the hot water to the house to radiant floor heat, heat exchangers, etc whichever each person has.
The Federal Tax Credit is the same energy conservation tax credit you claim when you insulate, upgrade doors/windows and use alternate forms of heating. The Montana state recycling tax credit is 25% of what it costs of everything involved. I am not sure if New York has a credit for using alternate forms of heating but you may want to check it out.

Use an old LP tank, elevated oil container, pipe for exhaust, air hose in bottom of LP tank a couple valves to control oil and air volume. Won’t be pretty, but when it gets hot ,lots of heat. Don’t expect EPA to beat a path to your door with a permit, but it’s hot and fuel is cheap.
It is my understanding that residential waste oil systems are not allowed under NFPA 31, Oil Installation Code. I haven't been on the 31 committee for 12 or so years so I could be mistaken, but last I was aware, it was not. The issue may be that a particular state doesn't support the NFPA Codes, but NY does. So maybe it flies and maybe not. Make sure you know before going forward. Also, check on how much oil you are allowed to have on hand. That can affect the insurance plans.

With a shop that small I'd just get a torpedo heater. Its what I use and I love the thing, plus it can follow me outside if need be

EFM boiler and furnace with larger combustion chamber. Metering pumps on wall using baldor DC motors and control boards. Used to make my own nozzle heater assembly but just started buying craig’s heater kits. Been burning waste oil for 10 years. At my peak burning 1700 gallons a year keeping the house and 3 car garage 80’F.
