I have a simple question.
Does anyone buy single wrenches for other reasons besides replacement, last minute need, larger sizes or small sizes?
I am just curious, because I have a boatload of singles that have no rhyme or reason.
What do ya'll consider a deal for single wrenche of a "common" size-1/4"~5/8" maybe up to 3/4"?
I am talking about Craftsman raised panels, and then misc USA satin (thorsen, powerkraft, proto, velchk, bonney,sk,etc.)

Sometimes I will buy a single wrench for a specific use. For example I bought a 7/8" to add to my camper so I can change out propane tanks or I have a 3/4" that stays with my car hauler because the ramps have a nut holding them to the deck.

Did you go out and buy a new one?

I deal with alot of panel screws (1/4" and 5/16"), plus electric motor nuts (11/32"). So, I have accumulated a whole assortment of wrenches in those sizes to cover any weird situation I might come across.
I have angle wrenches, DOE's, and DBE in all lengths from stubbys to aerospace length. Most are Bonney, but I've got a mix of other brands, too.

I've been known to heat and bend wrenches to make my own configuration as well.

I pick up tools from garage/estate sales all the time. Some are sets some are singles some are just one tool. If its US made i'll pick it up. Whether I have a use or space for it doesn't matter. I'll only buy a new single if I have a specific need.

I buy singles all the time to either complete sets I have lost spaners from or to cut up and make special tool or hang on machines that have specific size requirements for adjusting stuff etc.

Usually the expense of buying singles has kept me away, but I've found some reasonably priced ones recently, so I've bought quite a few to fill out sizes missing from my sets. I haven't worried about matching them too much, wouldn't find the exact missing ones anyways. It does make it look a little less pretty when they're not same lengths for similar sizes, have a bit different shape, or have a different finish. That doesn't affect the function by any means.

I have a few loose singles that I picked up just because, as well.

I will buy good quality singles from pawn shops or flea markets but rarely, if ever new!

Whenever I find a Snap-On wrench at a flea or pawnshop that is reasonable I buy it! :) You can never have too many! :)

Majority of my current wrenches, and sockets, were bought individually or in mixed lots used. With truck brands you don't get hardly any price break for buying sets new and full sets generally fetch a premium used which is why I upgraded piecemeal. Plus I was upgrading so I didn't need full sets immediately.

I only have 6 or 7 proper wrench sets. All my combo sets except metric midgets are a mix of MAC, Matco and Snappy.

I used to buy single wrenches thinking I could sell them on EBay, but not a lot of interest in a collection of many brand wrenches and a pain trying to list them as singles.. I will now only buy Snap on or any large wrench of a brand I like.

i hate it but i buy singles because im to cheap to buy a matching brand new set for the home garage. flea market or pawn shop scores make up my set. my home box was c-man raised panel set that served their purpose. Yet now i have a 6-30mm set built with all tool truck or tool truck quality wrenches. stuff like bonney, sk, mac matco snap on and cornwell.

be honest, the old macs are my favorite. bonney stuff to impresses me a lot. i wish they were still going as they made a quality product.

When I used to fix small engines, I would buy 10mm and 1/2 inch stuff religiously. Not much need for 11mm or 9mm wrenches, but I have ratcheting 10mm, open ended ratcheting 10mm, half socket wrenches, ets. Flex sockets and other things were also some of my favorites. A lot of 10mm on small engines.

Only when I can get good deals on them at Flea markets. otherwise it's to complete a set or replace a lost wrench.

I've only ever bought a single wrench as a replacement for a lost item. It's hard to sell singles of anything that normally comes in a set - screwdrivers, wrenches etc.

I built up my current main set with single purchases. I was still a student back then and could not afford the whole set. Instead of buying a cheap set, I bought my Gedore wrenches one per month.

I buy singles all the time for duplicates, even those things at TSC for 1.50 work well. Hard to get enough 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 10 and 13mm. 20$ gets a dozen wrenches, beats paying help to look for a wrench. Keep them on equipment, in golf carts, several hanging on rack in couple parts of the shop. I make a good share of my living with simple combination wrenches. Out in the field loss isn't such an issue, time to turn it with a simple wrench is faster/easier than carrying a fistful of specialty stuff.
They are so cheap that if I need one regular ion a given place I put one on it. They are some of my biggest return on investment tools I own. Cost more than a dollar to send someone looking for one. Can deal with a lot of issues on the spot for the sake of a few tools in a tractor box or golf cart. Got them hanging all over the place.

I usually do to complete a set or have an extra. I think I have at least 7 1/2" raised panel Caftsmans. A good example is when I got a Craftsman large wrench set they don't give you anything between 25 and 30mm. I bought the others to fill in the gap.

believe it or not frequently.

when i do scrap runs it's not uncommon to be 1.5 hours from home trying to get the one F"NG boolt i don't have a wrenchor socket for in my hand box.

Last month alone i have receipts for over 30 different single purchases.

for some stupid reason the crappier the salvage job the stupider and harder to find the fastener some idiot use to keep it there.

of the 30 i bought i need 1 two prong socket
and soemthing for square drive screws that i immediately stripped out geting the boiler

I just paid $3.00 for a 1/4" Craftsman raised panel wrench today as I managed to lose mine somewhere and wanted to keep my set complete. The guy tossed in a Stanley awl, and a tiny common screwdriver as well. :)
