No, real world experience but i have seen them in person... They cost a boat load and for the money. You could afford an HVAC system for the price of one. I looked into them while working at my old job and toured a competitor's factory...

Neither company sold me enough to purchase. 5Gs is alot to drop for circulation. They like to throw numbers around and talk about Return on Investment...blah

They have one in the local brewery warehouse. It is impressive to say the least. I dont' know what it costs but the thing moved stupid amounts of air at a very slow speed. The owner of the brewery said when they cranked it to 3/4 capacity, it was like a hurricane!

We have them at work in the production shops - they are huge and work best in high ceiling applications. Very quiet, but you can't have lights behind them due to the flicker. They are kind of annoying but you probably get used to them.

I went to central heat and A/C instead.

TSC has the drum fans on wheels during the summer. A buddy of mine bought one last summer, it really works good but will blow anything loose away! Very quiet. I think he paid about $189.00. YMMV.

you better have a very very large shop in order to fully utilize one of the BAF's. we have 6 of them in our high-bay (approx. 150' x 1000' - 50" ceiling height) and they move a TON of air.

I don't own one, wish I did, but I have seen them in action. It was in a port (boat yard) in San Juan...it was the first time I ver seen one, and they were very cool. They did not spin fast, but it moved a TON of air.

We have 8 or 9 of them in a Aircraft Hanger. We are not able to even think about HVAC because the hanger doors stay open all day long. The hanger is located in Clearwater, FL and Summer Temps get to about 95 degrees with 90% humidity. All I can say is it made working on the Hanger 100% better. Maintenance is getting done quicker and with less mistakes. Ours are varible speed and with it on 10 (1-10) it feels like 20mph winds in the hanger. Paperwork and rags are flying all over the place. They are quiet but not completely silent.

If you need air movement and are not able to have HVAC then I would fully recommend these fans.

I have seen them @the ASHRAE show. They always have Refrigerator Perry signing &giving stuff away.

They are some nice fans. (I also used to deal with a rep firm who dropped the line because the owner was offended by the name:confused:)

Depending on the size of your shop, thier smallest may be too big. I checked in to it for my 40x60 (12' walls) and it is too small. I have 4 industrial ceiling fans on a speed control. Works wonders both summer and winter. Keeps my heat circulated so it isn't 100 degrees near the ceiling and 50 at the floor...

A friend of mine is a BAF rep, and I have seen them in lots of industrial applications here in Western Michigan. Great for what they are supposed to be used for..

Thank you, I will look into it. What size are your ceiling fans?

My shop is a hangar 75x55 with 20' side walls. Sure sounds like it would be nice when the 42x18 door is open.

It sounds like you are a decent candidate for a BAF, but the lighting flicker issue may be an issue. If you have lighting spread all over the hangar, you will need the lighting below the level of the fan or you can expect flicker.

I think these fans are probably at least as, if not more useful for recovering heat in high bay areas in the winter, as they are for providing cooling breeze in the summer.

42 foot is not a very wide door, especially to be 18 ft tall.

A 75 x 55 space with 20’ side walls is the perfect size for one of our Shop Fans®. The Shop Fan is not only impressive, but it is the perfect fan for your space, very economical, and provides the most effective air movement for large shop areas up to 5000 sq.ft.

For comparison, one Shop Fan will have the same cooling effect as thirty four, 52” ceiling fans. Download this PDF for some quick info. Feel free to call me if I can assist you further in making your fan purchase a… “breeze”!

Hanger where I fly out of has an aptly-named Big *** Fan... they seem high quality and move a ton of air. Keeps it comfortable while being much more affordable than AC.

Can't make any statements towards the reliability, but they definitely move the air.

Try and find a closed Hummer dealership, they were known to use big *** fans. You might be able to score one cheap.

we have 2 at work
they are good for production or high use enviroments where the fan will run alot
they provide an energy savings over using multiple small fans

We are getting all four of our new hangars filled with them. I saw them in use at MCAS Yuma and they made a massive difference in the hangar on the 110° F flightline. They also make extremely quick work of pigeons and other birds that make their way indoors due to the high blade tip speeds. I've seen quite a few birds on the hangar deck sans wings and/or heads.

They must build 'em bigger in Georgia... around here a 42x18 door on a garage/shop would not be considered "not very wide", in fact it'd probably be branded a Big *** Door :)

My door has a framed opening 56 ft wide, and with the doors open (Horton Stack Doors) I have 53 ft clear width and 14 ft high.

There are a lot of common general aviation aircraft that either would not fit thru a 42 ft opening, or would require quite a bit of care to not ding a wingtip.

The air terminal at the Costa Rica airport has several of the Big *** fans instead of HVAC...they seemed to help but not much and they were about 24' in diameter.

I talked with Debi at Big *** Fans today and she has a 14' that sounds like it would work great. I am posting two of the pictures that she sent me of this unit installed in two of their cutomers hangar/shops.
