Does anyone have the JET 8" bench grinder? (Now a Baldor 8" added to it)

I'm thinking of buying the Jet 8" grinder. Any feedback from someone that has one?

Thanks

I have not used the JET grinder, but if I was looking to buy a new bench grinder and wasn't going to spend BALDOR money I'd go for the JET. My gut feeling is that its certainly a cut above your basic Sears Craftsman, Lowes, HD, or HF variety. I spent some time and found me a couple vintage craftsman block ginders instead but I would bet for an import the JET is a decent way to go.

I have one and love it. At a whopping 8 amps it's one of the few 8" grinders powerful enough for course wire wheel brushing. (wire wheel brushing needs much more oomph then grinding).

I bought mine when Jet made them in Taiwan.

The amperage is what attracted me along with cast iron guards and around hose outlets. (the Dewalt has square ones) That 8 amps equates into more power under load. I'm sick of home grinders that stall so easily. I've gone through too many. Only time will tell with this one. I remember the 12" Cincinnati's I used in shop classes in college decades ago. Those were so nice with the 2" wide wheels and all the power you could want.
I would have loved to get the Grizzly 10". The Grizzly 8" is rated at 14 amps at 120V and the 10" is rated at 8.9 amps at 240V. That thing must be unstoppable. As with all things, if I only had the money.....

I'm looking at a new one because I don't have the time to clean and/or repair a used industrial unit. Although the deals are out there, I wish I had the time.

I have 2 of them and they are very smooth and powerful. Both are used with 4" Multi-tool grinder attachments. Probably the best overall grinder available for the money.

Thanks for all the relies. It gives me more confidence in the purchase.

So here I am, waiting for the new Jet grinder to arrive tomorrow and I am still perusing Craigslist ads. After all these months looking, this morning a Baldor red 8" 812RE in good shape with all the parts for $50 shows up in the ads.

So, Like the lunatic that I am, I drive an hour and a half to go see it. Yep, it's all there and runs beautifully. I let it follow me home. Manufacture date Dec 1997. A little paint and replace the tool rests with the cast iron ones and it will be perfect.

Now I'll have two 8' grinders and I can compare them head to head at a later date.

8" Baldor for $50? You ****!

I have a 30+ year old Jet 8", pretty happy with it. As mentioned, it has enough oomph to use a wire wheel. Sad part is it cost me more than the Baldor you just got!

I agree!! You ****!!

Now you have one that you can dedicate to wire brushing and one that you can dedicate to grinding.

Now start searching for a third one so you can buff.

Changing wheels is a PIA!!!

I was so happy that I was smiling the entire 1-1/2 hours home. it was rather odd timing to say the least with the new JET grinder on the way.

I have four awesome USA made grinders, including two Baldors and I'm still looking for an 8" version. I think they're the sweet-spot for power and wheel availability/affordability. So congrats, that's an awesome find.

Also, there is no better way to find the tool you really want then to buy the similar tool you don't want as much. My 1953 Delta drill press and all of my grinders and vises were preceded by either lower quality versions or versions I paid up for.

Outstanding deal on the Baldor, and the Jet itself is no slouch-- as others have said, one grinder for grinding, the other for buffing and you'll be sitting pretty.

Well, the Jet arrived. I'm really pleased with it. I will do another thread on it later. Not as heavy castings on the guards as a baldor, but it is miles ahead of most of the grinders out there. The motor is real smooth and quiet right out of the box. Tool rests are very strong and are very square to the face of the stone. The stones were true on the face and the runout is almost undetectable. A real gem.
