I have been wanting a vise for years now and finally got a cheap 30 dollar one the other day and rigged to it my trailor hitch (I'm a diesel mechanic on a Dairy farm, any tool I don't own/keep in/on my truck is either lost are broken). Soon after I started using it all the time and couldn't believe how I got along with out it, well today the stationary jaw broke under a very small load. Anyways I did a search on vises and found a really good thread on it here. Then I did a little looking on ebay and prices seemed alright but no way of knowing how good they really are. Didn't know if anyone here might be some of the sellers or possibly even sell any with in driving distance of Cherryville NC.

Spend some time on the various vise threads so you will learn what to look for. You should be able to get a top quality U.S. made vise with 4-inch jaws for about $100... or as cheap as $40 if you are at the right place at the right time, or as much as $150 if you must have it now.

Either of the ones ZRX post are worth getting and that is the style you wand with the square slide enclosing the main screw, and all one with the dynamic jaw. the "U" channel slides pressed into the jaw are not as desirable.

Vises are "sized" based on jaw width, but that can be misleading:

The basic types are:
Machinist vise (as above)
Mechanics vise (U channel)
Homeownrs vise (Exposed screw, and cast/pressed in slifr UNDER the slide.

A 4" vise in each category is probably something like this in weight: 50-90 lbs, 20-30 lbs, 10-15 lbs.

If you found "The vises of GJ" thread, that will be an education in vises.

Go buy that Reed in Charlotte so I don't have to ride down there. Being Down East I would watch the government auctions, they always have good deals if your local it seems

Thanks for all the input, I was talking to a buddy of mine and he told me he has and older 4 inch vise laying around I can have for free as soon as I can make it out there so I'm gonna give that a try.
