Does anyone know anything about these workbenches?

Today I was in a local store that has a few of these Clarke steel workbenches in stock. They are sealed in a box and the box only has a basic drawing on it and lists no dimensions. None of the people working in the store know anything about them. I did a search on the web and found some for sale. I'm curious as to how tall the working surface is. The websites with it for sale list it as 38 1/2" tall but I think that includes the back of it which looks to be a few inches at least about the working surface. If anyone happens to have one would you mind checking for me to see how tall your's is. They started out a little over $400.00 and have been marked down to $80.00 so they are a good price if they are halfway decent. I'm just hesitant to buy when you can't tell anything at all about it. Here's the link to one like it:

$80?!?!? That seems like a pretty good markdown. Especially for an all steel bench.

somewhere...
They have those assembled @ my local fleet farm and they look pretty decent. Not $400 decent, but definitely $80 decent if you were in the market for a bench and you wanted a painted steel top (I wouldn't, due to scratches and stuff) I'm actually headed over there this afternoon and I could probably take a picture if you wanted, though they look just like that SJC picture...

I'll probably pick one up this afternoon. For $80.00 you can't go too wrong. I guess for that price even if the legs are short I can add some steel or do something to extend them a couple of inches or so. I've never had a painted top bench before, I know it will scratch easily. I prefer to use my wood benches but I was thinking I could use one of these for a tear down table to keep the wood from being soaked with fluids.

Rick, Yes TSC (Tractor Supply) has them. If your local store happens to be the Glasgow KY. store don't bother though because I just called, they had one left and I had them put it on hold for me :)

They also have this one for about $150.00 -

They don't have one of those out on display either but they box does have a photo and they list dimensions. My store has a bunch of those, probably 12 or more. It looks like if they don't sell they will probably mark them down more. The workbench above started out around $400, then was marked down to $250,00, then about $120.00 and now to $80.00. If they get those tear down tables down lower they'd probably be a good deal.

Rick, Are you going to give one of the $149.00 ones a try? I'm going to go pick the $80.00 bench up shortly, I probably won't be able to put it together today but I'll post pictures tomorrow or the next day when I can get to it.

I probably wont pop for the $149 one but I will have a look around . Honestly I dont have room for another bench but would have found room for the $89.00 one :D I figure with the sale they have going on though might be some tool storage stuff on sale too so I will go check it out .

That's about how it is for me. I figure for $80.00 I can find a place for one. I didn't really see any other storage stuff on sale, just lots of odds and ends, mostly small stuff. Some of their stuff is really marked down now. I picked up a bottle of concentrated deer repellent for plants. It was normally about $40.00 and marked down to around three dollars. I've used it before and it worked great so I stocked up at that price.

I think I could open the front door and hunt them without walking out of the house if I wanted to! One evening last year I came home and counted 18 of them in my garden, eating away. They were eating my white pines that I was planting faster than I could plant them.
I'm heading out to TSC now, I'll be back in a few hours and I'll post if there are any other decent deals.

I can vouch for the $150 tear down bench. I picked up the same model when a local auto supply went out of business. It's heavy duty and I've used it numerous times for transmission teardown. The built-in drain and sump make it easy to clean, and the drawer can hold large items.

The only issue is with the casters, hence the height is somewhat a problem. Although easy to move, the increase in height makes it a bit uncomfortable.

The powder coat is excellent and resists a lot of abuse.

A good deal at that price --

I went and picked up the $80.00 bench and they had a second one so I got that too. They had a bunch of the tear down benches in stock at $149.00. The manager there said if they don't sell in a week or so they will be marked down more so I think I'll keep an eye on them and if they go down lower I might pick one up. I didn't see any other bargains today.

Goodfellow, Does the drawer on your tear down table slide smoothly? One of the employees in the store told me they'd had a couple of them returned because the drawers didn't slide well or at all. What do they use for the sump? It looks like some kind of plastic tray that pulls out but it's hard to tell from the picture. Does the whole top of it slope slightly towards the drain?

John;

The drawer slides nicely, but this thing is a kit. If you don't assembky it "square" then the drawer will have problems. I had to tweak mine a few times to get the thing nice and square.

The sump is simply a deep plastic tray that can hold a lot of fluid (can't remember how much), but suffice it to say that I rebuilt a few transmissions without completely draining the fluid -- and there was plenty of room for more.

The top is sloped towards the right rear where the drain is located. So no matter where the fluid spills, it'll drain perfectly.

I used to dread transmission work because of the mess, but with this table the problem was solved.

Good luck -- hope you score a bargain

Thanks for the info on the tear down bench. It sounds like a pretty nice bench. I might pick one up if they get a little cheaper.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to get some time to put one of the benches together that I picked up today. It looks like they might be a bit short but I'll have to see.
