Does anyone recognize this 1/2" drive socket box?

Not mine. It's on a FB tool collector forum and has me intrigued as the color is a perfect match for pre-war Craftsman tool boxes. However, I can't find any such box. The owner bought it with a mixed set of sockets consisting of Indestro, Herbrand, and other tools and is now using it to house his Craftsman metric socket set.

My best guess is Herbrand.

I think I have a Hinsdale with the handle in the lid like that, but different style handle.

I have a Williams, but it has a center clasp, and it's black.

Herbrand loved blue. And blue is not a common color in vintage toolboxes, or anything else. Herbie blue composite handles would look awesome in that box.

The Herbrand boxes that I have seen had some kind of sticker on the inside lid right in the middle of the box; it would appear that lid has no sticker.

I had a Kraeuter set that came in a blue metal case like that but I it wasn't wrinkle finish. That could also be an old military box someone painted blue wrinkle finish.

And if you could tell me and the other Craftsman fanatics where we might find blue wrinkle paint that matches pre-war Craftsman boxes, you would be a hero!

Brian I know you've seen this on the other page but posting it here for others.

This is NOT mine. It was posted on the Herbrand thread by another GJ member. Same 3 point closure method, same clipped corners on the lid. Darker than a lot of other Herbrand blues (and yes, very Craftsman-is) but this one has the decal. The only construction detail I notice that differs between the two is that the top handle on the box Brian posted is apparently spot welded on while the box I'm posting has 4 rivets showing on the inside of the lid.

On another note: Brian, I'm sure you saw the items sold on eBay 8 months or so ago, someone selling off a small treasure trove of a collection. Many of his clamshells had been repainted. While I'm not fond of Long C repaints, his stuff was spot on perfect. I'd love to know how that was done.

If that's your ulterior aim here, Brian, we've had the wrinkle finish discussion before, but I can't remember where, and I'm too lazy to look.

To the ideas in Jock's PM link I will add that people have reported success with a hairdryer on an almost dry excessive coat of rattle can paint. You have to move it around so it doesn't push the tacky paint all in one direction.

I have created a crackle effect with glue, a decoupage trick. See my tricked-out customized Blackhawk 32-CD Q.D. socket wrench set box, linked here. That was done in layers. Gold base coat. Then Elmer's glue. Then the black top coat. The cracks, prompted by the fast-drying glue, appear parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the brush swipe. I am wondering what would happen if the glue coat was much thinner and the top coat was sprayed on instead of swiped? Maybe I will experiment.

Lastly, there are very good commercial wrinkle paints available in rattle cans. VHT, for example. Found in most automotive stores, but you can order from a fairly large array of colors. If the issue is no prewar Craftsman blue, has anyone tried misting a non-wrinkle prewar Craftsman blue over a light wrinkle paint base that has cured for a full week?

Unquestionably, yes! I'm colorblind and matching colors is a major challenge for me. Experimenting is not an option for me - it's a waste of time and money - so I'm looking for sure fire solutions, if there is such.

I appreciate your input and hope others can chime in with their experiences! Perhaps there needs to be another thread?

If you look at a can of spray paint, it says to recoat before 15 minutes or after 24 hours. If you spray between, you get crinkle paint. Figureing out the right time frame is the hard part.
