Hey all, Been trolling for the last month or so. I was just curious, does anyone rent a shop that isnt used for making a living??

My brother and I are gear heads alike and found a guy who has a 50x100 garage with 2 10 foot doors. Its at his house. His dad built it 20 years ago for gear head activities but the son isnt as interested and rents it out to us. We rent essentially half of it. We put a lift in and that where all said gear head related activities go on.. Its about 15 minutes from the house. I would love to have my own, but we pay a total of 100 bucks a month. Its hard to justify building my own.I will post some pics if anyone is curious...

Sounds like a good deal to me.
I have seen guys rent old industrial buildings, but the concern is the kind on neighboorhoods they are in.

I currently rent a 400 sq. ft. section of a large warehouse for $150/month, including electric. No heat or water. I've got a 220v single phase plug for my welder/plasma/lathe, decent lighting, smooth floors, so it's basically all I need. The neighborhood isn't too bad, but there isn't much around. I found out a few weeks ago that I'm losing my lease because somebody is renting the whole building on a long-term lease, so us partial renters are getting the boot! I've found it's very hard to find reasonably priced ~500 sq. ft. working garages in my area, and can't get any friends committed enough to split a larger place. I'm probably going to have to delay my project, move everything into storage, and hope I find something else before the snow falls! I also rent an apartment; if I owned a home I would surely have my own garage!

That's the problem with renting. You get a good deal, move in all your equipment, get a few projects going and in a few years the landlord "pulls the plug" on your lease. Now you have to pack up and move everything into storage.

Landlords can be a huge PITA for gear heads -- finding a good one is hard. I'm sorry you have to move out and start the search over again..

I have a shop/warehouse I rent to keep my cars and some stuff.
I wich I could have the deal for $100 a month, but that wont work where I am

to me its a huge pain in the *** and a financial drain but I am stuck as I cannot currently afford (the money or the room) to build my own shop and if a get rid of the cars I could never afford to get them again

I'd love to find a garage or small area just to store a car for $100 a month by me. Places I looked were for close to $200.

200 a month is still super cheap
4 hours of side work would pay for that
but , here in jersey -with zoning laws and real estate prices kill that dream
wifey looked to rent a house
1800 bucks a month
2 car garage -not part of the deal nor for rent at any price

I rent a two bay with office space, $200 per month but a bit run down. Working on turning it into a body shop. If work stays OK then I will just use it for my stuff.

I looked into it a few years ago. The rental price was right but the insurance would have killed me. And it was not in a nabiorhood that was someplace I would want to leave anything I want to keep around for long.

I rent the back half of an 8 car garage, or "barn" for $75 a month, 10 minutes away from home (2.5 miles), there's a Harbor Freight between my house and it.

I'm not convenient to the "powers that be" at the house when I'm there, so I should get more done than I do.

I think I got it pretty good.

Yesterday, I mjust have to move his mowers to get to my stuff... that's my new engine dolly on the right... Shhhhh.

Cool. Its nice to know that im not the only one who cant put up a great garage build story.. Trust me, I wish I could. Being in a typical suburban hood with .25 acres, doesnt allow for anything and still have neighbors who like you and a back yard. I have looked at buying land in the area (about 35000 for a 1/2 acre) but then another 100000 for a shop just isnt in the cards. I will post some pics of the place tomorrow. We got pretty lucky finding it for 100 month. Anyway thanks again to all who responded!

I found a local business with some extra bays that they were willing to rent, so hopefully it should offer some more security than just renting from someone with a residential garage
